What do you think is MM's greatest capability/feature?

I'm posting this off topic because it may not be relevent to many. I was wondering what others thought was MM's most valuable capability? Knowing what others think is most important is a good indication of how people use the program.

Here are mine in order of most-valuable first:

Number one for me is definitely auto-playlists, there is simply no other program out there that can do auto playlists as well as MM. Any improvements in this area, to me, would provide the greatest value (like letting people write/store their own SQL select statement as the basis for an auto-playlist, once they know the database of course). Or enhancing the query builder to be even "more better".

Number two would be the fact that MM can play so many different file formats right out of the box, with WMP it was always a struggle to get codecs updated.

Number three is the overall layout of the UI with library tree/grid and separate now playing area, it is intuitive and business-like (as opposed to other programs that overtly skin themselves to look like Mr Spocks computer screen on Star Trek). Using MM is just like using good business software, a no-nonsense interface geared toward getting a job done. As opposed to just being someones opinion of what is a "cool" UI. Also the ability to designate how double clicks should populate now-playing when there is something playing or not, queuing, etc.

Number four is the fact that the BPM column is available everywhere, that "other" program (ms WMP) neglects to expose this tag, and thus loses all market share with anyone in the DJ business.

Number five is the productivity I can achieve with MM in auditioning thousands of tracks for my client dance studios.

ease of skinning (mm3 anyway)

massive but fast help forum.

developers that care to fix all bugs as fast as they can.

tons of skins

great looking web site.

great cleaning up of spam in web site by the mods.

mods that have been here for long times some since the start of mediamonkey.

willfulness to get medimonkey the most used in the world by having members be able to translate to their langauges.




can't think of any 3rd one. and as you see those are too hard to find which is in which order for me.

I think that the expandability with plugins and scripts is MM's greatest feature. Next best would be its ability to sync to pretty much any device.

There is one feature that bought me over all others and that one made me involved with MM dev.

Tools -> Options -> Player -> Auto DJ/Now Playing -> Show warning when track to be played is not accessible.

Second one that was essential in my Live performances on Parties is Now Playing -> Edit -> Clean (Remove Inaccessible)

Finally third one is VirtualCD

I'm guessing that most of you will not find those important but I really do.

3. user community which is friendly and very helpful

It was a combination of all three that brought me over and has kept me here.

I would echo Nyn. I see the fact that the program allows scripting as it's #1 selling point by far. Reason being, if the program doesn't do something natively, chances are that it's something that could be added in by a scripter. Sure, there are many other things that MM is great for (as well as there being some weaknesses if we're being fair) but scripting is there to help cover most of the "weaknesses" making the program infinitely stronger as a product.

I was deliberately evading these features and focused on those when I found MM in 2003.

Today I would say like nyn's third. Users and this community.

That's a tricky one, it was the ability to sync my ipod with album art and unicode letters intact, the inobtrusive micro player, simple and functional tag editor and customizing possibilities that won me over from Winamp.

1. rusty told me it would do what i wanted it to. and i left j.r. mbmplayer faster then sliding on wet ice.

1. The ability to handle large databases. Without this capability, all the other features mentioned would be irrelevant to me. I found mediamonkey when Itunes started choking on my "huge" 30k library. Now 5 times that size, the monkey keeps chugging along!

Personally I like the little cute little monkey image on MM 2.5.998. The one on MM 3 looks a little strung out to me. It's kind of like the difference between the cute little 2 year old and the been around town 17 year old.
