1345: "Media Tree" issue(s) [#7239]

Post by Mizery_Made »

Here on my system, with configurations that have been converted from my MM3 install and ran through each MM4 build, I am unable to move the "Now Playing" node above the "Entire library" collection on the Media Tree page of the Options.

I also notice that it seems to take a considerable amount of time to refresh the program after making changes to these options. The program locks up for ~8 seconds on my system which is a considerable increase over similar functionality in MM3. Making a change to the tree in MM3 happens pretty much instantaneously.

Third is more of a comment based on my personal view of the new set-up of this area, rather than an "outright bug." I think it would be a good idea if there was a better distinction made between the hard-coded nodes, and collections. As it is now, it's difficult to tell what is what unless you select it and check of Edit and Delete is disabled. I think a visual indication as to whether it's a collection or not would be useful.

1) I think Entire Library is always the top most.

2) Seemed to work fairly fast, only slightly slower than closing Options without changing Media Tree settings.

3) I agree, Collections should be distinguishable from non-Collections nodes.

This is unexpected behavior for me, and I suspect there would be others that agree. I see no reason why we should be able to place the Now Playing node above "Music" for instance, but not "Entire Library" as they are both collections (the latter is just hard coded in). Beyond that, forcing NP to be below Entire Library becomes kind of moot when you can hide the Entire Library collection anyway (granted, that puts NP at the top, but it should be possible for those that want to use Entire Library too). Furthermore, NP is the first node in MM3, why should that... uh, view(?)... be broken in MM4?

I hadn't noticed that it occurs with the Options in general (as I honestly haven't messed with MM4 much), but in that case it's a general issue with Options that should be fixed. The unresponsiveness is not good, when again, it was instantaneous in MM3. I suppose it could be due to it being a "debug" build (which generally run slower), but it's still a considerable span of time.

1) I don't know why, also it seems by default the Now Playing is way down the list (I initially thought I lost it with the upgrade). I haven't used Entire Library yet, so it doesn't bother me, but I think it's best the order of nodes isn't restricted in any way.

2) The speed doesn't bother me.

1) I connected a portable device (SD card reader) to my machine and it is now the top most item and can't be repositioned. So the issue is that the top most item can't be moved nor that another item can be made the top most item.

re 3) In the pulse skin I gave a distinct look to the collections nodes icons.
You might wanna try that skin.

I am using the Pulse skin (easily my favorite out of the defaults skins). However I think you misunderstand what area is being referred to. The collections and nodes do look different in the actual Tree, however I'm/we're talking about the "Media Tree" options sheet (which was Previously "Collections"). In that area, there is no indication given as to what is a collection or a built in node, unless you highlight the item and see if Delete & Edit are available (thus meaning it's a Collection).

Oh I see what you mean now.

This gave me an idea. Maybe they could add icons there.
Ofc this would not solve that problem if you are using i.e. the vitreous skin.

So maybe there could be some visual clue. ( Maybe a " * " in front of the collections nodes? I don't know. )
Do you have ideas how it could be implemented?

I don't follow you. Here shows the Pulse skin:

See that the same icon is used for "Music" (MM default collection) as "Downloads", "Organized music", "Christmas music", and "Regular music" - all custom collections that I have made. So how are your icons any different than in Vitreous?

@Eyal: Likewise I'm not sure what you're saying either. The only unremovable nodes are ones it would not make sense to delete (eg UPNP, Playlists, My Computer, Net Radio, etc.) Isn't it sort of intuitive that these can't be deleted?

I thought Mizery_made wanted a distinction between the:

"built in nodes" : Now playing , playlists, upnp servers, my computer

and the

"collections nodes" : Regular Music, music, classical music, podcast, audiobook, music video, video, tv, downloads, organised music, christmas music

In pulse, collections nodes have a custom background while built in nodes have a transparent background.

Sorry if I misunderstood.

No problem.

By the way, I mentioned the vitreous skin as an example. But I didn't mean to criticizes it in any way.

I really like the vitreous icons. They look way more up to date and smooth than the old MM3 icons.

3) Yeah, the problem is in Tools > Options > Media Tree where there is no visual way to identify which Media Tree Item is editable (is a Collection) and which isn't.

In other words, it isn't a skinning issue, but a MediaMonkey issue.

I can't say I'm a use fan of the choice to gray out non-collection items in the Media Tree settings. It looks as if the items are disabled.
