1345: Now Playing looses sort indicator [#5165]

Post by Lowlander »

When sorting on a column in the Now Playing window the sort indicator indicating you sorted on that column disappears shortly after sorting on the column.

Tested on skinned 1345 on XP.

It's intended behavior (see 1273 item 2).

I'm not a fan of this choice. I understand there is an issue leaving the sort indicator as when you add files it no longer is valid, but then maybe it shouldn't be shown in the first place?

I don't like that the indicator disappears either.

I understand that it disappears, but then it shouldn't be shown and I wouldn't have a huge problem with it not shown in the first place.

Or it should be smart enough to know when the sort indicator is no longer valid (user adds files, user moves files around).

I don't like the way all this work tbh.

I'd prefer if sorting doesn't change the order of playing.
I really don't see why or when a user would want to change his nowplaying queue according to sorting by artist, genre, rating, ...

re. the indicator disappearing. I'm a bit confused. I'm red the ticket but I still don't understand the reason. Am I missing something?

Isn't the indicator suppose to show how you order the tracks? In this case why does it need to disappear?

I disagree, the sorting should affect the play order, why would you sort otherwise? Unless Shuffle is enabled the Now Playing should play in order so sort order should affect which track is played next.

I would sort to have a better vision of what is in the now playing queue. ( for me that makes sense )
Having your now playing queue destroyed just because you clicked on a header is frustrating for me.

I don't use shuffle, only auto-dj. If that makes a difference.

Ideally for me, I'd like if the now playing node and the now playing panel were independent.
If you click on a header in the np node it would only sort there and not in the np panel.

edit: I realize that it would bring inconsistencies.
I don't know if that would be better tbh.

This seem to be a complex issue. Maybe its better as it is currently.

For me the Now Playing (window or node) is the Now Playing queue and as such should behave like that. This means any reordering of tracks (why would manual drag & drop behave different from sorting?) should affect playback. If you're trying to organize tracks it shouldn't be done in the Now Playing in my opinion.

I agree it would be nice to be able to lock sorting (right click on column header > disable sorting), but the undo has saved me so far when doing accidental sorts.

I guess my problem is that i'm not used to the undo function.

So I don't know the ideal solution here.
But I just want to state that:

-having the indicator disappear ( I understand why it's that way now ) feels weird.

-having to undo after each sorting seems very inconvenient to me.

Will be necessary as some use it for it's intended purpose of sorting playback order.

I should add that there is a # header. Showing the playing order.
If playing order wasn't updated when you sort by a header, the # would show you the real playing order.

Wouldn't this be more convenient?

And there could be a "make the sort order = to playing order" entry in the context menu for users who needs this.

No, because now I need to go through a list of thousands of tracks to see which track plays next.

Although this would work it makes it a 2 step process for something that should be a 1 step process. The Now Playing is a playing queue and should be treated as such. The fact that some want to sort for looking around shouldn't make sorting for those who are sorting playback more hassle. You could add the Now Playing tracks to a Playlist and sort away in this case.
