Advice on how to fill a USB from MM

Post by head4heights »

Having invested in a 32GB USB stick that actually works in my car (it has an interface cable from the system) I was able to copy about 3000 MP3 tracks to it at the max bitrate. In order to ensure a degree of randomness to the playlist I used MM to create a random playlist and then exported them all as a long list of sequentially numbered tracks, all essentially into 1 folder on the USB. The car system has happily played them sequentially, however as I am approaching track 500, it is taking so long to find the point at which it left off that when it finally does start playing it almost startles me :)

The question then is should I have allowed MM to create album folders etc on the USB stick so sort of break it up? Would this be any quicker to start playing in the opinion of you more experienced MM's jockeys? Have I, in the interests of ensuring a degree of randomness, er, shot myself in the foot?

The cars system has a "random" play feature but I didn't want to take the risk of finding that in trying to be "random" it is unable to keep track of what has already played since the stick was plugged in. The danger of a poor pseudo-random (lets not get into a debate but the nature of random!) algorithm that could end up repeating some tracks and never playing others is what made me go down the road that I have.

Any sage advice most welcome!

One friend on my had the same problem. He resolve it by buying a set of smaller cheap USB sticks (2 GB, 4 GB). He has filled each one with different music genres or playlists. I think it's a great idea, since it makes it easy to make music follow your mood.

I think you'll need to just play around with settings to see what your car radio can actually handle. It might do better with folders, but maybe not. It might do better using a Playlist, or maybe you just need to limit the amount of files on the USB. You might want to search the internet and see if others have encounter similar issues with your model car stereo and see if any workaround suggestions are available.
