Sync'ing audio CDs with a portable device

Post by amarcord »

I am still trying to copy my CD collection to my brand new iPod video... I have already reported a problem about synchronizing songs from the VCD. Now I am reporting a problem about CD songs that are not in the VCD :D

Suppose that I have a bunch of audio CDs in my MM library. Some of them are in the virtual CD, some aren't. I'd like to transfer some CD songs that are in the library but not in the virtual CD.
So I go the iPod options, first tab, and select the CDs that I'd like to synchronize.
The problem is that CDs that are not in a CD drive at the time of synchronization are ignored. MM does not tell me that these CDs were not copied to the portable device.
It shoud at least tell me. Or even better, it could invite me to insert the required CD(s) in the drive so it(they) can be copied (and converted to MP3) to the iPod.

Anyway, now I know that the CD must be in the drive if I want the transfer to happen. So I'm proceeding one CD at a time: add the CD to the sync list / insert the CD into the drive / launch a synchronization.
For the first CD, everything happens as expected.
But when I synchronize the second CD, MM is asking me whether I'd like to delete a list of tracks that were found on the iPod, but that are not in the synchronization list. If I look closer at the files it offers to delete, this is precisely the tracks that were copied from the first CD!
IMHO, MediaMonkey should leave on the portable device the tracks that are in the library, even if they are not available at the time of synchronization. This is must have in order to be able to transfer one's CD collection to a portable device without requirring the CDs to be first transferred to the PC hard drive.

OK Try this:
Tools->Options->Player->Player Controls->Show Warning when track to be played is not accessable

It could help. Also it is old MM feature (way before Sync. is even mentioned) and maybe it will be not 100% what you want but I'm curious what you can make with (find it usefull).

CD and Synchronization

Amarcord,
But when I synchronize the second CD, MM is asking me whether I'd like to delete a list of tracks that were found on the iPod, but that are not in the synchronization list. If I look closer at the files it offers to delete, this is precisely the tracks that were copied from the first CD!
Do you have '[x] Delete tracks that aren't on the Synchronization list from the device' enabled? That's probably what's causing the dialog to appear.

Yes, this option is enabled. However my point was not about this dialog in itself, but about the fact that MM considers the files as to be deleted, whereas they are still in the synchronization list.

This will be fixed in the next release, i.e. tracks that shouldn't be deleted won't be.

Thanks, the issue is fixed in the beta 4 release that I have just installed: tracks aren't deleted any more when they are not on an available media.

However (sorry ), the other issue I was mentionning is still there: in the synchronization list, MM allows me to select any CD I'd like, but doesn't warn me that it won't copy the CD to the iPod if it is not inserted during the synchronization. Nor does it invite me to insert the CD.

Have you tried my solution, as that works with me no matter what device plugin I use (althru I do not own iPod).

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I had tried your suggestion, but didn't get better results. But the message displayed when trying to play an unavailable file is exactly the one that I'd like to see when synchronizing an unavailable CD for the first time. Are you saying that you get this message when you synchronize with a portable device other than an iPod?

Yes, there isn't a warning message for inaccessible tracks for synchronization. We didn't want to make things too complex for now, but maybe some improvement of this will come in future versions.
