Also check \iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo file on your devices, that's what MM uses to check which device is connected. Namely, either a line starting with 'pszSerialNumber:' or 'SN:' should be different on the devices. In case they aren't, you can delete one of the files.

It looks like removing both sysinfo files did the job, although it only worked when I removed those files with MM closed.

Unfortunately the same problem just returned.

It may have some something to do with the fact that the 2G iPod had to be recharged because it was almost empty. At least that's the only thing I can think of.
