B1449: NAS Portable Install Hangs on 2nd And Subsequent Strt

Post by BitPusher »

I installed the debug version of MM,B1449 over B1448 as a portable install on my Synology DS410 NAS. After installing, the first start of MM ran without problems. However, on the 2nd and subsequent startup attempts MM hangs with the status bar indicating "Reading Files" but no files are being read. At this point the MM process is using between 0 and 3 % CPU as shown by the Windows Task Manage. Since the MM window is not responding I clicked the close window "X" and shortly thereafter get a message that MM is not responding and then I chose "End Now" to get it to terminate. This problem occurs from executing the portable install from either Windows XP Professional, SP3 or from W7 Home Premium, SP1 on a notebook.

I also have a local test install of B1449 and it doesn't have this problem.

The Portable NAS is installed to \\DS410-1\CEJROOT\PGMS_WIN\MMV4-DS410 and NOT a mounted drive letter. I have been doing this since the early 1420's builds with no problems. I reverted back to MM B1448 and MM worked normally again. I then reinstalled B1449 and the problem occurred again only on the second and subsequent startup attemps.

I downloaded and ran debugview and these are the last lines in the file:

I don't now if the entire debug file would be helpful, but I'm not sure where to send it.

Re: B1449: NAS Portable Install Hangs on 2nd And Subsequent

Hi Bit Pusher,

I can't replicate, but it sounds similar to what some other users are experiencing on regular installs. Can you:
a) Generate a debug log using dbgview showing the 2 initial runs of MediaMonkey (the first one that succeeds and the second that fails)? Try to minimize any other activity.

b) Narrow down to which build this failure occurs? Some users have indicated that it's ~1440, but we've not been able to reproduce the problem at all.

Thanks so much.

Hi Rusty.

I'll generate the debug logs you requested but I can't do it for a few hours because I had to revert back to build 1448 to sync my MM .FLAC files to a WDTV Hub which will take a while to complete.

Having been a onetime mainframe systems programmer, I keep a "System Log" of changes I make to my PC. Here are all the build numbers I installed as a portable install on my Synology DS410, and all of them worked without this problem until build 1449:
1393, 1394, 1397,1399, 1402, 1403, 1404, 1408, 1412, 1415, 1416, 1419, 1424, 1433, 1434, 1439, 1442, 1445, 1447, and 1448

I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem, but after installing the builds that put "Web" on the tree by default, the first things I do after installing is to go to Tools/Options/Library/ and select Media Tree and then click OK to get rid of "Web" in the Media Tree and then go into Help to veriby the buld number I installed.

Will report back after the debug logs are generated.

I just submitted the two debug logs you requested - Ticket # THO-623542. There are two debug logs in one .ZIP file. I ran these tests from Windows XP Professional, SP3 and portable install to URL \\DS410-1\CEJROOT\PGMS_WIN\MMV4-DS410

At least on my system this is a repeatable problem. Let me know if you need more information.

Hi Bitpusher,

Sorry to ask you again, but can you tell me if this is resolved for you in build 1450 ?

It was hopefully resolved by http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=8488

Thanks.

Hi Rusty.

I checked my e-mail about an hour ago and got a message from Pavle asking me to send the .elf file from the previous failure, which I did.

Then I checked here and saw B1450 was available so I downloaded it and installed from my notebook since my main XP system is powered-down for the night.

Unfortunately, I got the same failure. Worked fine on the first startup and hung on the second. Same symptoms with reading files in the status bar with no counts showing and an unresponsive window. I don't have debugview on this system so I didn't capture any log data.

I've got to run some errands tomorrow but if you haven't found a problem I can revert to B1448 and then B1450 and test on XP with debuglog. If you find a problem respond to this post. Otherwise when I finish with errands I'll capture debuglog data for B1450.

It''s getting late and I'm ready to hit the rack now.

Hi Rusty,

I reverted back to MM V4, B1448 and it runs normally. I was going to capture a DebugView log for the 2nd run of it but forgot to start DebugView. However I captured the 3rd run of B1448 which ran normally in case you can compare any differences with B1450.

I Also included the .ELF for the failed second run of B1450 and the DebugView logs for the first and 2nd (hung) runs of B1450.

The symptoms of the B1450 hang were the same as for B1449. MM splash then main screen comes up, status bar says reading files but no file counts, and MM window unresponsive (moving the cursor over it produces the Hourglass).

The The .ZIP file was uploaded to ticket# PEM-558206.

Hope these help in finding a solution.

This has been fixed in MM V4, B1451 - Thank you Petr!

I installed the debug version on my NAS using the URL as the install directory, not a mounted drive letter. Then I ran it 4 times from my main XP, SP3 system and then 4 times from my W7, SP1 notebook and there were no startup problems at all.
