Sync to Nokia Lumia (Windows Phone) without Zune

Just thought I would post this as I was suprised that it actually worked and there does seem to be some level of interest on the web. I was looking to see if I could sync my Lumia 800 with mediamonkey on a Windows 7 machine without installing Zune.

After plugging the phone in via USB, I went into Device Manager (right-click My computer, Propoerties, Device Manager) and found the new devices with the yellow hazard symbol representing the lumia. Right-click the device and choose 'Update driver' then 'browse my computer' then 'let me pick from a list' then 'portable devices'. On the next screen choose '(Standard MTP device)' and 'MTP device' and install the driver.

Then run mediamonkey and you should see the Nokia device. I synced my files to '\Music\<Album Artist>\<Album>\<Artist> - <Title>' and synced my playlist into the '\Playlists' folder as 'Extended m3U' with 'Force relative paths' checked and 'Use unicode' unchecked

I then looked at the Lumia and it recognised my playlist with all the files. I was surprised it worked but am not complaining.

I guess it should work for any windows phone but perhaps someone else could post if it does.

my Lumia shows me, that all songs were from an unknown album.
Did i do something wrong, or is it the only possible way, to put my music on my lumia without zune?

I couldn't get it to work on a Samsung Omnia 7, I just get an error message:

Problem while copying file.

Any suggestions, I hate Zune!

I have lumia 610 and when I try to configure under tools-portable/audio devices-windows media compatible device, my device is not shown.. I get device is not connected.. have zune installed... pls help what should I do

Are you using Auto-Sync. Only Auto-Sync will prevent duplicates from occurring on the device.

I tried your method as well, but all I got was an error window of MM when trying to sync. So I got as far as installing my Nokia Lumia 710 as an MTP device.

Might it be that I'm running WP7.8 as of yesterday and today and finally did the effort of trying to finally link it to MM?
Do other people run into trouble with WP7.8 as well?

To my knowledge only WP8 works with third party software. As WP7.8 is new it may also work, but I haven't seen anyone confirm that.

I think that may not be true as this topic was started in May 2012, at that moment in time there was no WP8 available yet.
