Hi Guys,
Don't know if this question been asked before but have been unable to find info on it.
I am using MM to update the genre's of my music videos - which does show up in MM itself but displaying the genre field in Windows explorer it does not show!
Am running windows8, 64 bit.
Your help will really be appreciated.

What file type? MediaMonkey can currently only write tags in some video formats: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... erties/4.0

Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
I have tried it on avi, mp4 and mpg.
I have updated it in MM, shut the app down and restarted and confirmed that their new 'genre' values still reflect.
But not at all in my explorer - refreshing the window also did not help,

Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
If MM is unable to update these file types "genre" - is there anything else that you guys can suggest?
The truth is that I am only looking at updating the genre's and nothing else.
thx in advance.

Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
MPG cannot be tagged at all, there is no standard tagging format for MPG.
But AVI and MP4 is supported. I've tried and they are tagged and the genre is shown in Windows Explorer too. Tried e.g. genre "Pop" and "Dance". Do you really use MediaMonkey for Windows (for desktop)? (last beta version could be downloaded from http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... &start=165).

Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
thx for the responses.
I did install the beta from the link that you supplied into a temp folder but when running it - it does not import any of my music videos and it also does not offer any 'video' category within the tree list on the left. (followed all the instructions)
I could convert all my mpg files to mp4, allthough I am not keen as I am going to forfeit on quality.
Me wanting to tag their genre is just simply a case of me being able to search my music videos adequately due to the size of my music video collection.

Could you generate me debug log form scanning one of your folders with music videos? (description here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=6&t=341) It should work as always, they should appear under Video node then.SAcape wrote:thx for the responses.

MediaMonkey saves tags for MPEGs to its DB, so you can search your videos in MediaMonkey.
Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
Do I do this with the original version - not the beta one that I installed in the temp folder?
Realizing that the beta version does not give me an option for videos.
(I could make a screenprint of the beta version which will show that there is not options vir video.)

Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
No, debug version is needed, it gives us some debug message, which could help to find the problem. I recommend to install it as portable.SAcape wrote:Do I do this with the original version - not the beta one that I installed in the temp folder?

Screenshots could help, I am not sure, that I really understand, what problem you have. "Video" node should appear automatically after scanning some videos.
Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
Great stuff
I downloaded the 'new' beta from sunday, installed that and all is fine now.
Like the skin too.
So now it pulls in all my videos and update the mp4's.
Great work but I still wish I could find a simple tagger where I could update the genre's off all my music video types.
Have already converted my .vobs to mp4 even though I had to forfeit on the quality. Did it because I did not have so many .vobs.
But what do I do with all the other file types as I have plenty mpg's etc...
What is the best solution for being able to search one's music videos based on name, artist and genre?
(all my videos already contain the artist and title - so searching on that is not a problem - but sometimes one want to work through the 'blues' collection

Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
As I said before, MPG format itself does not allow to store metadata, so no tagging program will tag them directly to the file. I have seen some program, which was using ID3 tags (i.e. the same as for MP3 files), but this in fact causes file damage and some players will not play such files then. Note, that Windows 8 does not allow to write genre and other metadata to MPG too.
I would use MediaMonkey, tag the files in it, so the program will write info about e.g. genre to the database, and then you can use MediaMonkey to browse videos by genre, artist, etc. (under Video or Music Video node).

Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
I have read tens and tens of cataloggers, organizers, editors, etc.. and MM certainly stands out.
For my own personal reasons, I prefer using Windows Media Player as my default media player - is there any way I can setup MM that I can double-click on a video from within MM resulting in it being played in the Windows Media Player?
The way MM list the various videos and how one can search/sort them also works for me.

Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
MM currently does not allow to choose other player for videos, but it would be quite useful feature, I have added it to our todo list - http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=10798.
Re: Genre not showing in windows explorer
That will really be great - will make it so much more flexible.
Once the feature is released, what will be the best way for me to 'know' about it.
thx for all the help - it really is appreciated.
ps(in the meantime I'll start cleaning up my tag-data with MM
