The same thing happens if the tablet is awake when I plug via USB, but screen lock is active.
I have to awaken tablet, and provide the Android screen lock credentials *before* plugging in the USB, in order to get the device node.
Apparently this is not the case with sone other tablets according to wutzin in another thread.
I don't see how the Nexus products can be seen as having a buggy kernel given that they are produced for Google. I have had both the the original version of the Nexus 7, and the 2013 version with KitKat.
