Cannot prevent MMA from playing in my car

Post by regaug »

Hello-
Everytime I start my car (and the phone connects with the car's Bluetooth), MMA starts up automatically and begins playing music. Even though I don't want it to. Even though I pressed the stop button in the Notifications tray, and the player "went away".

It doesn't matter whether I press Pause or Stop. It doesn't matter whether screen is locked or not. It doesn't matter if I back out all the way from the UI. It doesn't matter how long ago I stopped the player.

The other day I am going out to lunch with my boss and he wants to chat. We get into my car, he starts telling me something, and suddenly MMA interrupts us with the loud music I had shut down 4 hours earlier when I was driving into work. The ONLY way I have found to prevent this aggravation was to restart my entire phone, so that the MMA processes are not running yet.

I have always felt that MM was all about being able to control your own media, yet I feel that I have no control over MMA.

Hi,

Haven't heard of this happening before--I hope it wasn't playing 'Air Supply' or something else that might have caused your boss to lose all respect ;-)

I've never seen MMA trigger playback on its own. Can you tell me:
a) What bluetooth device is in your car?
b) Are you certain that another app isn't responsible for triggering the playback? e.g.
- Another music application could be playing music, even though MMA is in focus
- An automation tool or a headset manager designed to initiate playback upon connection of an output device could trigger playback
c) Does this happen if you use a different music player (e.g. Winamp) over bluetooth?

Thanks!

This has just started happening to me but not just in my car but when i turned on my phone ear piece (not headphones). It turns out that it looks like 'Headphones Helper' is seeing any access by bluetooth as a headphones trying to connect. This did not happen before 224 (maybe 225?). Did MMA change in any way to how it reacts to bluetooth ??

I will check with the guys at Headphones Helper and see if they have any thoughts.

Ha-ha! Well, it started playing Seven Lions dubstep. I think it weirded him out a litte... :)

I don't remember this happening with other players I had tried on my phone, but I will test again. I will also try to find out if there is a headset manager running on my phone, but I am un-familiar with how to find out. Let me dig on that. Also, I do not know version of Bluetooth is in my car, it's a 2013 Honda Civic sedan.

In reference to post from dtsig, sometimes MMA resumes playing when I unplug my earbuds, but that's not easily reproducible. MMA re-starting on it's own in the car is very consistent.

I've not seen MMA start playback on Bluetooth or headphone connect or disconnect. Are you sure no other App/device setting is doing this?

When I connect my phone to my car's bluetooth, the car immediately and automatically sends the play command. Perhaps you could open your phone's stock media player before connecting to the car and see if that starts playing.

Hello all-

Been out of town on business, but I would like to report that as of installing build 229, this issue appears to be fixed. Hooray!

In reply to questions about other music players on this phone, I never had this issue with MMA Beta, which I had been using daily (in the car) for many months: I noticed the problem immediately after updating to the Pro version (maybe it was build 226? not sure).

The issue was still occurring, and easily reproducible, on my commute home this evening. But after installing this 229 update tonight, I went for a drive and have not been able to reproduce the problem so far.

Thanks for the professional response and quick bug fix! You guys rock.

I am having a similar issue where MMA takes over no matter what application was previously outputting sound. When I switch to bluetooth in my car, MMA will startup even though it was not the active application (nor was it even active). This seems new to one of the most recent releases (say within the last two weeks) and it still occurs with 229. I'm not sure what type of debugging information would be useful to you. This is on a Nexus 5.

OK, so the problem seemed to be gone for 3 days, but now it's back again; I have no idea what I did to re-activate the problem. Was still running build 229.

To summarize the issues again: When I switch to bluetooth in my car, MMA will startup and start playing, even though MMA was not even running before. If I am talking on the phone via bluetooth, then MMA often starts playing as soon as I hang up the call. When I arrive at my destination and turn off the car's ignition, music that was playing from MMA via bluetooth, starts playing on my phone speakers.

The problem has become aggravating enough that I have un-installed MMA altogether, and restored the Android stock music player. This stopped all the above issues, and now the music plays only when I want it to.

Yes - this is exactly what I am seeing as well, in all respects.

We've made a change in relation to MMA failing to terminate when a bluetooth connection is active: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=11861

This may affect/solve this problem. Can you let us know?

Also, killjoy can you confirm what head unit you're using (I see regaug is using an HTC Vivid connecting to a Honda Civic radio, and that you're using a Nexus5, and I'm curious if there's any commonality in terms of the head unit).

Thanks!

I tried a several times today, and the issue is still there - MMA always plays when I select the BT source.

MMA always plays when I select the BT source.
When you say 'when I select the BT source', are you referring to a setting on the head unit? Or when you choose the BT device output in Android?

Thanks.

Head unit. It still seems to then start playing MMA no matter whether or not is was running before. I'll keep an eye on it.
