Global Hotkeys not working in Chrome

Post by duodsg »

Just a few moments ago, I tried to change tracks as I usually do- a global keybind using the following key binds while browsing in Chrome:

Playback: Next file (Ctrl+])
Playback: Play/Pause (Ctrl+\)
Playback: Previous File (Ctrl+[)

I have them bound to three of my mouse buttons, and I haven't had any problems while using it for the last two years (apart from the fact that some full-screen applications, like games, don't allow global hotkeys to function).

For some reason, it really started bugging me that it wasn't working in Chrome, seeing as how so much of my work is done using Chrome. It's a minor annoyance to have to flip to another program or MM itself to change tracks.

I checked Chrome's browser extensions and settings for any conflicting keybinds- there were none. I also made sure my keybinds were still set to "Global"- they were, but I toggled them on and off, existed MM, restarted, etc. No change. I also went into Mediamonkey.ini to insert a Low Level Hook in case it wasn't there, but it was already present. I set it to "0", saved, fired up MM, closed out, edited the ini to set the LL hook to "1", saved, restarted. No change.

Is there something specific about Chrome that prevents MM from allowing global hotkeys to work while it is the active window? I have no problems using these global hotkeys in other programs like MS Word, email utilities, etc. Chrome seems to be the lone culprit.

I don't use any keyboard shortcuts for Chrome except for Ctrl+Shift+T to restore previously closed tabs, so if I need to somehow dig under the hood of Chrome to get it to play nice, I'm ok with that.

Thank you!

Thanks for the link- I had read this thread earlier in my investigation about this problem but wasn't sure whether to follow it or not.

Unfortunately, the only file located in the Hotkey registry is a string "(Default)" with a value that's not set, but it is not deletable. The only thing I can do is delete the four keys underneath it (which correspond to the four hotkeys I do currently have in use) but once I did that, I went into MM and lost all ability to specify new hotkeys or key combinations. My entire hotkey list is cleared, sure, but I can't add any either. I fear that this will require a reinstallation, and I will lose all my preferences, playlists, etc.

What am I supposed to be deleting in RegEdit to do this correctly? The post was not specific.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MediaMonkey\Hotkeys

Delete the Hotkeys folder. It should be recreated on restart of MM.

Great, thank you! That deleting fixed the issues I was having and gave the needed clarification on the original thread.

Much appreciated. I hope this is of use for anyone who encounters this problem as well.

Well, the problem has returned again...

I deleted the entire HOTKEYS folder from the registry (while MediaMonkey was turned off) but there was no effect. If I click on any other app except for Chrome, the hotkeys work.

Any other ideas for how to prevent Chrome from interfering with the global hotkeys? I even ran MM as an administrator and restarted the computer but none of it works. Ironically enough, other global hotkeys (forward and back) work just fine in Chrome, so I know it's Chrome's focus that is the problem.

Thank you ahead of time!

Yes, I understand the ways to disable keyboard shortcuts in Chrome under the Settings > Extensions > Keyboard Shortcuts menu.

I do not, or have ever installed, Google Play music or any other streaming player (I don't stream music at all, I just have music on my hard drive directly) and all keyboard shortcuts are disabled. So there is no interference in terms of media keys for Chrome specifically that would be creating a conflict.

Most likely Chrome impose handling as default even Play music is not installed. What keys do not actually work. I have found that Volume control stopped working after Windows 10 1607 update (Another bug in 1607 I Guess, just wonder why they've done that)

I Created http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=13552 to Investigate Volume behavior. Windows 10 Anniversary Update 1607 made more problems than it fixes.
