IPB rather then phpBB.

Post by Nordoelum »

Greetings,

Just wanted to add this feature suggestion for the forum.

Since the user database is growing, and since you are selling a gold version with the income. I would suggest changing the forum solution to Invision Power Board.

Alot more neat features like quick-edit, Rich Text (WYSIWYG) Editor, and many more.

Take a look at this post on the official forum: http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.p ... pic=175491

I think that phpBB works well, anyway it's better to invest the money in MediaMonkey.

In my opinion the rich text makes forum harder to read and the editing makes them more confusing. Anyway it's already really easy to edit your text.

How can rich text make it harder to read? It is just as same as the regular one, just having the advantage to make a post neat if preferred.

What is going to be more confusing? I use a norwegian forum that has version 2.0.4, and when I use neowin.net that has version 2.1.6 it is a dramatic change.

And the abbility to use the quick-edit just after you found a misspelling as just awesome. Instead of loading the whole page just for changing ONE word.

And frankly, the cost of IPB is very low, if you put it in the perspective of what you get.

That is something Invision Power Service can help with.

The thing that just want to forward, is that phpBB is one of the lowest forums solutions with lack of features. Simple Machine Forums is better then phpBB.

Just a question Tenko: What is wrong with IPB?

The fact that the forum is in basic text makes it much more readable. The problem with fancy rich text (phpBB has some formating) is that too many people try to format the text for no reason. I like to keep it simple, that allows focusing on the content instead of the makeup.

Anyway many formatting options are available, luckily few use it.

Forum package is a personal thing. As phpBB works here and MediaMonkey is not in the forum business it should just stay with phpBB.

Just tried it and guess what... It's offline .

I'm not impressed with IPB either, mostly because it's not free.
Most IPB forums use the standard skin (guess why...) and I like the standard look of phpBB2 more. (it's a detail, but an important one)
Besides, Jiri, Rusty and co have more important things to do than installing and learning a new forum system.

WYSIWYG would be nice, but I wouldn't pay for it.

But hey! What's cooking here... :D http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=332772 (WYSIWYG for phpBB2 in alpha development).

is that phpBB is one of the lowest forums solutions with lack of features
Yeah right... who told you that? Anyway, in case this is true, phpBB is probably still the fastest and most secure.
Extensions: ExternalTools, ExtractFields, SongPreviewer, LinkedTracks, CleanImport, and some other scripts (Need Help with Addons > List of All Scripts).

It might has something with that I am personaly inlove with IPB :P But for now I will close this topic, since you have answeared my topic. (I would guess you are the admin right?).

@Steegy: It looks like they are about to use the subSilver skin for phpBB3 also. And that skin just suck comared to IPB, SMF, MyBB, IceBB, UseBB. Anyways, thanks for the phpBB dev headup :)

you want to see a nice php site

got here and look at this site the whole place is php including the bb.

http://www.iceteks.com

then tell me you can't make a custom phpbb? i won't listen to you about it if you do because iceteks was all made custom with the php code.

steegy. yepper i know lockergnome is offline he had a poll up for several days asking if he should archive the old ipb board or move it to the new phpbb site or just start with a new phpbb. most of us told him to just start a new site since the ipb was messing up too bad. so i guess he is making the new lockergnome help forum site now?

roving cowboy / keith hall.

I honestly didn't understand your post :(

And that site didn't look that good. And it is using IPB 1.2.

Of course you can make a custum phpBB. I haven't sais otherwise. It is just that IPB is contained with ALOT more neat features.

But as you have stated before, this forum is supposed to be minimalistic(did I write that right?). That I fully respect. Why wouldn't I? I just say that the subSilver template for phpBB sucks :D Not that you need to change it. I am using this forum anyway right..

Nice designes:
http://xmillar.com/BZ/index.php
http://thevistaforums.com/
http://forums.montroseriver.com/

To make an example :P
