Sync fail after doing so well...

Post by sordup »

I have a new (to me) phone (Pixel 4a 5g) with a lot of space on it, for a phone, and have been in the process of syncing some music to it from MMW5 (I have MM for Android on the phone as well). It was going along swimmingly transferring about 20 gigs already in a couple of sync sessions yesterday and today, and now suddenly when trying to sync some more (there is 45gb left on the device), I continue to get, first the "media transfer process frozen" error message, and then this...

and then this...

I have rebooted, both Windows and Android several times, tried different USB cables, disabled then re-enabled USB file transfer on phone, opened MM with the phone already plugged in and alternately plugged the phone in after starting MM, all to no avail. What yesterday (and this morning) worked so well now is dead in the water. There were no changes to the system on either machine in the interim.

I am using MMW5 version 5.0.4.2690 on a updated Windows 10 machine.

What could be going on?

Hi,
as for the "Application error" message: Was this a one time problem or it always happens later after the "media transfer process frozen" error message message? Could you please download and isntall the debug build: https://www.mediamonkey.com/sw/MediaMon ... _Debug.exe
and submit crash log (item 4A here viewtopic.php?f=30&t=86643 and write the log ID here)?

As for the "media transfer process frozen" error message: This mostly happens when there are already a lot of files on the Android storage and MM5 need to delete a file, then Android internally re-enemurates something which can take minutes (Windows Explorer is also frozen during that time when trying to access the storage) and it usually takes minutes and then it is "unforzen" by its own and sync continues, isn't this your case? Are you saying that even wating minutes does not resolve the "MTP freeze" ? Alternativelly you might want to sync via Wi-Fi which does not result in the "MTP freeze" issue.

The "transfer frozen" message happens now every time and waiting doesn't seem to help. Typically I've simply left the phone and computer hooked up syncing while I go away, and every time I come back now it's just hung up with this message showing, having been there for a while. But...with 45 gigabytes free space left on the device wouldn't that preclude MM5 needing to delete items to make room?

And although the "Application error" message didn't happen every time, especially in the beginning, it does now happen often.
I am away from the Windows machine at the moment but will download the debug version when I'm back.

Deletions depends on settings, not free space. So generally if files that were Synced before and are now no longer selected to be Synced they'll be deleted on Sync. There would be a confirmation though.

Are you saying that Okaying the frozen message doesn't have Sync proceed?

In my scenario no sync settings have been changed between sync sessions when getting the "frozen" message. And yes, Okaying the message does not cause it to proceed. It was after Okaying that I got the "Application error" window that followed. This has happened several times now.

If you search this forum for sync problems, you will find no end of stories like this.

It appears that sync as it currently works is just not up to the task for large numbers of tracks. Once the data gets screwed up, it basically needs to start over.

Until they fix this I think we are better off copying our tracks and playlists manually ie using file explorer or android app File Manager plus.

Fastest way is to put it all on a microsd plugged into your computer, and then stick the sd card into the phone.

Of course, you could try MM5 Sync to the plugged in SD Card, because it is much faster than wifi or usb connection.

This does not help anyone who wants their tracks on the internal phone memory.

In the past, several months ago, nothing happened after the "frozen message" appeared, the sync went nowhere.

Now the "frozen message" comes back occasionally as wrong error message, because after clicking "OK" the sync runs successfully and faster than before. There hasn't been a MM update in the meantime - I assume the reason is improved USB drivers in Windows.
