I'm in the same boat. I haven't really been using MediaMonkey very seriously, but as of late I've been trying to figure out how to use it more efficiently, but it's layout seems to be.....strange. For example, I too would like to be able to shuffle all of my music EXCEPT Christmas music for times outside of the Christmas season. So I started looking into it and learned about Collections. I thought it was strange that there was one default "Classical Music" collection. Why classical? and how was it being filtered out? Apparently it uses a field called "Type" to filter it out, which I thought was odd. Why not use "Genre"? What is the difference between "Type" and "Genre"? I don't know. I'd personally prefer to use "Genre" to filter out collections, but I'm not sure if that is possible, but I'm going to try to find out.

Yes, you can use Genre in Collections to filter out content.

But why did they include "classical" as a "type"? Type does seem more like "Music", "Video", "Podcast", or "Audiobook" where "Classical" seems more like a genre. I'll play around with using genre to filter, but I just found it odd. When I click on my "Classical" collection, there's only about 5 albums in there (I have a LOT more). How did those files get tagged as "Classical" type? I didn't do that.

Because users use if differently than Music. Music is Artist based, but Classical is often used Composer based.
