The most pointless genre type ever is...

Post by vilbs »

... soundtrack. What on earth is "soundtrack" as a description of a type of music. Arghhh why do the little things annoy me so :) The type of music that is "Saturday Night Fever soundtrack" is somewhat different to "Platoon soundtrack" which is different to "Lost Highway soundtrack".

Anyone with me? Let's lobby parliament :D

For me it's Other / None / Blues / Genre / ...... all things that seem to be a genre name. Blues is used for a lot of things, because it's the first genre in the ID3v1 genre list, and is automaticly selected (it can't be empty).

Soundtrack / FullCD / Mix / ... is stored in the first custom field for me.

I use "Soundtrack" as a "top genre" for music that is really _specific_ to a movie or play.

The only cases where it gets applied is when:
- I have the COMPLETE soundtrack of a movie (just to keep it grouped), or
- the track is really identifiable with the OST (for example a famous theme song or a song that has never been released anywhere else).

For me, the most pointless genre ever would be "Oldies".
I HATE that designation!!

Haha yeah "Oldies" is another particularly rubbish one. But come on - get rid of the Soundtrack genre - your albums deserve better ;)

I use soundtrack for songs that are more like sounds used in the movie. Normal songs on a soundtrack get their appropriate genre.

For me the most useless Genre would be Genre. Just like Title in the Title field, Artist in the Artist field, etc.

I use soundtrack for songs from movies (not band songs with lyrics) like the orchestral background music that plays during the movie.

Shrug, I use soundtrack for albums which is associated/classified/related to a movie/tvseries/musical.

I also use Soundtrack as the album artist so they all group together in the artist node so they aren't clumped together with other various artist compilations.

i use soundtrack for OST's

eg. trainspotting, pulp fiction, Lord of Rings.

Is this not normal? Means if I want to listen to the trainspotting album I know to go to My Music>Genre>Soundtracks>Trainspotting.

I do the same. I don't care if it is the Original/Official Sound Track (OST) or not, thriving to have a handy library instead of an ideologic one. (Some people want the world to use OST instead of sound track... whatever)
Genres I use are showtune, sound effect (yeah no music but hey ...) and soundtrack (but I'm getting rid of the last one, replacing it with the actual genres)

I spose if you are browsing then maybe the genre "soundtrack" makes sense - but come on almo - Born Slippy you have tagged as "soundtrack" genre - thats just wrong. That is not its genre of music - only the compilation album that took it. If you know what I mean. Anyway understanding how badly things can be taken on the internet - just so you know - I only mean this light-heartedly. But it's wrong. Really wrong.

ps It's not a matter of "ideology" just a matter of scalability and usability - genre is the style of music that the tune is. Fact. It would be just as wrong to have a genre of "compilation".

pps Don't worry - I know - I should get out more and not get too upset by such things ;)

yeah, i understand that soundtrack isn't born slippys genre but i'm not prepared nor do i have the time or patience to go through every track (22000) in my collection and give each track it's own genre (i also don't see any benefit in doing this). I use the genre to make it easy for me to find my music rather than browsing through huge lists. It also means depending on my mood I can browse through only what I feel like listening to eg. if i'm getting ready to go out or having a party i would look through electronic/dace.

Giving each track it's own genre would also mean when auto organising using the genre field my albums would get split up all over the place.

If you were to tag every track in your collection with an exact genre you would have so many genres and sub genres that finding things would be a nightmare (for me anyway). That's why i prefer to use a few broad genres and place everything in one of those.

But each to his own. Whatever works for you i suppose. I don't really care what the 'right' way to do things is. I just know what works for me.

soundtrack is a real genera it is used by all moive industry studios to inducate the music and voices that go with the movie's video track.

there for sound track is real but if you don't like it don't use it.

but don't request it be removed from my use just because you don't like it.

i happen to use it when i put albums from movies in like the soundtrack from the prince of egypt movie or from the movie of the musical 1776.

or any christmas show like how the grinch stole christmas which i have in the computer complete with out commericals. as well as the charile brown christmas soundtrack.

so there is how it is used by me. and i think the useless one is Rap just what is that ? it sounds like your asking to rap up your presants or maybe rap up your self in good warm clothes before you go out in the snow.

so why is that listed in music ? to me rap = crap.
