Installation Issues

Post by Freexe »

During the install it asks you where you want the Start Menu directory to be, but you dont give the option not to have a Start Menu directory created. Plus it creates its in the All Users directory and not the <username>/start menu (which could cause problems with muliple users as the database is put in the user music file location, I'll get to that in a bit).

My suggestion would be to have the option to install for all users or for the current user only and put in the appropriate Start Menu directory.

Next and finally is where the database is put! At the moment it creates a horiable array of folders bang in the middle of my nicely arranged My Documents Folder (my d:\ drive) arg! I can't even move it! AND it creates those horiable
'Previews' and 'Virtual CD' folders that I can't get rid off (please only create these when they are needed). Now I know you have to create them in this folder or the Application Data folder to be able to install and run this program without Administrators rights, but please let me move them back in the Mediamonkey folder where it belongs (I dont mind ini editing or what ever I have to do, I'm a avid Opera user so I love that kinda of freedom.).

Sorry for the late rant, and I really do love this program. (If your unclear what any of the above means please just ask)

- Previews and VCD folders location can be configured with MM's option dialogue (and if you overwrite your MM installation with another one, these settings are kept)
- 'My music' system folder can be configured (check registry or tools like TweakXP and so on)
- Concerning the DB, its location can be let in the 'my music' folder or customized with any valid path (refer MM's readme.txt)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response.

My Big problem with the Previews and VCD folders is they exist. i dont use them and i dont like folders that i dont use.

My "My Music" folder is configured just the way I like it (ie with music in) the database is Application Data and thats where is should go. and by including it in my "My Documents" folder if you have muliply users then they cant use the same database (maybe have an option to install for multiple users or single user as I suggested earlier at the moment you do abit of both by putting the database in a user only folder and the shortcut icons in the all users folder).

And thanks for the help on moving the folder thats what i will do, but the suggestions above are for the wider public still.

You can change the location of the DB to anywhere you want as Octopod said earlier. You can even share it on a network or run it from a portable drive.

You'll need to add DBNAME = full path/MediaMonkey.mdb under the [System] part in the .ini file.

There have been requests in the wishlist forum to be able to manage DB location from within MM and even to be able to quick switch between DB's.

I'd also prefer to have all data in the application folder of MM. But the problem with Windows is anyway that applications keep putting folders into the My Docs folder as they are run. This is the way that things work now (unfortunately, very unfortunately). Anyway MM allows you to change some of these settings, so it is not all bad.

that might be how other people do it, it doesnt mean you (MM) have to do it as well, this is the first program I have used that has done it, all my other programs put it in the Application Data directory (which is where you should put).

Plus as I have mentioned before if you log out and log in as another user, MM is in the Start Menu (& or desktop) yet when you run it, it doesnt use your database (as the My Documents folder is in a different location). Now this is fair behaviour if you want it like that, but I like to pick those options myself during installation. I'm just saying give people the option (hopefully one to keep it in the MM install directory as well)
