Setting a drive letter for an external HD

Post by BarryManilow »

This question not so much about MM as about disk management. All of my music is on an external USB hard drive. Does anyone know how I can force Windows (XP Pro, SP2) to always call that hard drive the 'E:' drive. As it is, it's sometimes E:, sometimes F:, which confuses the library monitor on MM. It doesn't seem to matter if anything else is plugged in before, taking up the E: spot, sometimes it just decides it wants to be F: today.

thanks for any hints, BM

Try the help system in windows - search for disc management and it should guide you through setting the drive as a letter. It should always call it that in the future....

When you have your disk connected to this:

Right click my computer on your desktop and select "manage" (or right click from the startmenu if you don't have the computer icon on your desktop)

Goto "Disk Management", find your disk and rightclick on it in the right pane - select "change station letter and path" - Here you can select a disk to use for your usb disk. I would suggest to use a higher letter than the first available in order to avoid conflict with future disks.

(Wording can be different, I'm guessing according to my norwegian XP...)

What you need is USBDLM ,a freeware utility ,it is a Windows service that gives control over Window's drive letter assingment for USB drives,
i have been using it for years.
