Since a number of us have had the same problem and this seemed to be an active thread, it seemed to be a good place to talk about our collective experiences. Obviously, a save settings button isn't the solution, but I'd rather not start a new thread. As a guest, I'm not even sure I'm allowed to. Now, I tried a new build of MediaMonkey and have the same problem I had before. My settings--including but possibly not limited to the layout of the program, nodes, and preferences--reset to the defaults after about 15 to 30 minutes of usage. This problem still happens. I have a friend at work who also owns MediaMonkey gold with future upgrades, and he has the same problem too (although he's less motivated to fix it). I am happy to download and install a version to assist in debugging. But for the moment, I have to stick with 3.x in spite of purchasing a lifetime license.
The time limit you said is telling me it is windows causing it, in 30 minutes time music can fill up the cache file / ram / virt mem / page file which ever your system calls its extra memory section. And doing that makes windows auto empty temp files to get more room. Since you didnt save the settings they were in a temp file that got/gets toss'ed out. Thus resetting monkey back to default layout. At least thats what it is telling me its doing. So solution is to set up mm layout then close mm to save it then restart mm and see if it is reset in 30 again

I have to say, I was deeply skeptical of the explanation, but so far, so good. I made sure to finish my changes, then "Exit" the program officially from the start menu (no Alt-F4 or double click on the upper left of the window or right click on the upper right). So far, it's held up well. I haven't used it a ton, but it's been days now and it hasn't reverted to the factory default. So thanks.

I do have to say though, I've always had more than 8GB on this machine (I have 32GB right now) and typically had a large page file, although not any more since I have so much memory and a relatively small SSD. I'm happy that it works, this does seem like an unusual problem and once I've never encountered before.

God, I did a bad job of writing that. I meant to say that I finished my changes and customizations, I went to the "File" menu and selected "Exit." No Alt-F4, double click on the upper-left icon or the "X" on the upper right.

I made an account just to say that this has so far worked for me, and to thank rovingcowboy and the quoted Guest for their detective work.

My problem wasn't time-based. MediaMonkey simply wouldn't remember my library column preferences between closing and re-opening the program. (I hadn't noticed any other symptoms.) Now, I no longer have to look at those ridiculous Path and Filename columns! Hellooooooo, the point of metadata is to obviate the need to look at file paths and names!

Thanks again!

Edit: I came back to say that, bizarrely, MediaMonkey has a different column layout the takes effect when a search is performed. However, this one is saved, too. You just have to set the same columns twice. Oh well.

In case someone is still having this problem (MM4), which I had, try changing the location of the temporary directory (Options/General). I moved it to Users\_You_\AppData\Local\MediaMonkey\ and It seems to have done the trick.
