'synch' always just copies - what gives
Moderator: Gurus
My daughters both received Ipod classics 80 gigs for Christmas, when I purchased them I was torn between an 8 gig or 80 gig for 70 bucks more. When Apple prices these things they put a lot of thought into it. Anyways I put every photo and peice of music on the machine that we owned figuring it would be a good backup system.
To the point, not only do my all my mp3s get rewritten but every one of my 5000 5 meg photos, this is with Itunes. I came back to MM hoping their syncing program would work properly but after reading this I guess I am wrong. With my usb port being the original 1.1 this takes quite long. Another problem I encountered, I expected to simply be able to drag and drop files from their Ipod back to my C: drive. Not so, when my wife went to find all her Christmas music on our computer after I had cleaned them all off she wasnt very happy. These little gadgets arent meant to be used as backup devices I guess.
Everything you think should obviously work easily does not, I am frustrated beyond anything and I suspect half the reasons for these somewhat obvious flaws are for copyright protection.
Now I am trying to figure out why I have double files on MM, and why I cant delete just one of them without deleting the other. Someday Ill have this all sorted out, but by then I am afraid my family will have left me due to neglect.

Re: it's only the ones I've added since the upgrade
Well that's interesting.forya wrote:The only files that ALWAYS resync are the ones I've added to the library since the upgrade to version 3.0.1.1127. all the other ones are behaving just fine.
if this helps?
The plot thickens!!
For me on MSC/MSU mode it happens with all tracks. It will wipe all tracks off the Sansa and recopy them over, even if nothing was changed.
Can't say this is true in my case, as I have never used ratings. I doubt any of my tracks are rated. Wish it were as simple as this, as I would happily delete ratings... it's not a feature I use.thekid wrote:Alright guys I think I just figured it out. It has to with ratings. If your tracks are rated, it will re-sync them every time (weird?!) I just learned that even if they appear rated, for some reason they still are so here is what I just did, and although it may not work for you, the problem is completely solved for me. I recommend only trying one album so you don't have to worry about losing all of your ratings.
Thanks for the input, and I am glad it's sorted out your syncing issues.

I had a play around, to see if I could find out what this MSC/MSU was all about... I think I've managed to make my ipod classic auto-sync properly now... tho I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I'm not entirely sure how.
One thing I changed, which my intuition is telling me is responsible, is an option on the ipod device properties dialogue (right-click on the ipod's icon in explorer and select "properties", then "hardware" tab, then after highlighting "Apple iPod USB Device" and click the "properties" button down the bottom and then finally choose the "policies" tab)... i've changed this so that "optimize for performance" is now selected, which according to windows allows it to "improve disk performance."
I just tried it again to make sure I wasn't dreaming the first time. Clicked "auto-sync" with the entire library in the sync list and instead of 8500+ tracks, it just copied over the 48-odd new and amended
Hope this might help.

Sort order?
I haven't used the autolist feature but generally from being a programmer it sounds like your problem isn't the criteria but the sort order. All three files fall within the parameters of your search and it's always going to pick the first two. You need to change the sort order so the newest episode is FIRST in the list and the oldest is LAST.

Thanks for the reply in the other thread Mark,I had already followed this thread and still could not work the problem out
.
However, I have got things working now.
I have not changed the Ipod policies to increase disk performance, it is still set to rapid suppression of files. In the Auto-sync Tab the erase from disk the tracks that are not in the sync list is ticked with exclusion of \Ipod_Control\Games\RO.Also the synchronise tracks from the disk to PC is ticked with the confirm box ticked aswell.
Now when I sync the Ipod I get a window saying that various Mp3s' have been changed on the Ipod (which is not true!) and do I want to erase these from the Ipod to which I reply NO.
Next I get a window showing files that are not in the sync list these include various Mp3 files and also Mp4 files which will be the video clips which I sync through ITunes and do I want to delete these, so I untick all of these and sync the Ipod.
Now the auto-sync is very quick and all infomation (tags, album art etc) is transferred.
I still have a question though, wher do I physically find these rogue Mp3's that have apparently been changed on the Ipod ??
The pathway indicated in auto sync is iPod_Control\Music\F07\01R.mp3 and variations of.
Ant suggestions gratefully received.

This was a bug for me and my Creative Zen VW back when MM3 was beta.
Turn off the option Modify Timestamp When Updating Tags.
MM used to sync the entire library over and over again until I did that. It was frustrating because ALL my music would be transcoded from Lossless files every time.

What if there was an option to only sync a track once? MM should keep a sync history of previously synced tracks for a device, so that they do not get synced to that device again (obviously with a function to reset the history).
This would solve two problems, both the oversyncing problem in this tread, AND it will keep from resyncing tracks you have already synced, but deleted from the device.

Right, but then you run into the problem of tag updates. If MM thinks that the tag has been updated just by looking at the timestamp (which is what it appears to be doing), then it's going to resync the file. From what I saw, it does this in case you use an external tagger to retag files. It thinks the files have changed and therefore resyncs it.

Do you have your iPod set with this option:Powderhound wrote:

Exclude Folders:
*.mp4, *.m4v; Phase*; iTunes*
EDIT:
The Phase keeps the Phase playlist for the Phase game. I use the "iTunes" prefix to keep all my Smart Playlists on my iPod while letting MM sync the music. The Classic is set to manual sync.

I have the same problem with my Samsung M500 Phone
I upgraded to the GOLD version of MM just so I could automatically convert from FLAC to MP3 format for my phone. I have a 2GB memory card and it takes at least an hour if I make any change to the playlist.
This is not acceptable behavior and I am very suprised that 1) I never read about it in a review and 2) Noone associate with MM has commented one way or the other on the problem.
Hope we can find a solution, but it doesn't sound too hopeful.
