HOWTO: Synchronizing Sansa e2xx and its microSD with MM

Post by Inspired »

Here is info on how I got this device to sync correctly including the microSD chip.

TECH DATA

- I am using MM 2.5.5
- I have a Sansa e280 with a 2GB microSD chip/card.
- I connect the device using MSC mode
- In windows my Sansa is set to use drive letter S and the microSD users drive letter R

Device Setup Instructions
In the sync options you'll need to set the Sansa (S) up as a WMDM (d_WMDM.dll) device. I recall it entered the list that way automatically when the device was first found by MM.

Set the microSD (mSD from now on) as a "Generic Portable/Audio Device" (d_USBMass1.dll). When doing this you'll need to identify the device. Enter in the drive letter you have assigned to the microSD drive. In my case it is R. You then click the "find device" button and select what is in fact the USB Device ID for the Sansa player.

I put in the "Sansa microSD" into the device name field for easy reference. Put what you like there.

After this you should now have an entry called "Sansa microSD" and another called "Sansa e2xx (S)" in your device list. (Drive letter will be the one you use -- S in my case)

In the Tree in MM both devices show up with their own node. The mSD has little icon with a blue screen on a black device. The Sansa e2xx has what looks like a little hard drive.

Synchronisation Instructions
Tagging files for sync
In my instance I use Rockbox on my Sansa which dual boots along with the default Sansa software.
I use the CPCHAN Menu build of Rockbox. This is his build that splits Audio books (etc) out from music files. All music files go into the folder \Musica
and all other audio media goes into \Other_audio
So your exact setup in the following instructions may vary. Use what I've put here to give you the right idea and then do it the way that suits your configuration. If you don't have Rockbox I highly recommend it. Be sure to get a nice theme from http://www.rockbox-themes.org

For syncing I do the following:
MM has three internal custom tags available. One of these (the 2nd one) I have called "Sync Switch".
There is a script called "Editing Custom Fields with Pre-Selection". You can find it here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7583

I set up this script to make a list for Custom Field 2.
That list (in my instance) is:
1) Sansa Music Sync
2) Sansa Other Audio Sync
3) Sansa Removable Sync
4) None

Number for could also be "" to clear the field entirely rather than "None"

My context menu now has a new menu item called Sync Switch and it has these four options in it. I can tag tracks with one of these options very easily, as you can imagine.

Creating playlists for sync
Now... you'll need to set up an Auto-playlist for each sync type you have. In my case that is three of them. One for Music, one for other audio, and one for the microSD.

You do this by simply having each Auto Playlist filter for the name of one of your of custom entries in the custom field you are using (Custom Field #2 in my case and called Sync Switch).

Configuring device sync settings
With the above all in place you're now ready to go back to the two devices you started setting up in the Sync settings for MM.

In my situation (yours may differ) I have, as you know, three sync lists. Two go to the Sansa and one goes to the mSD.

So... on the "Sansa e280 (S:)" device I set it up as follows:
AUTO-SYNC LIST options -- Tick "Sync only the following".
Click ADVANCED over on the right.
I selected my two lists for the Sansa
- Sansa Sync Music
- Sansa Sync Other

I configure each of these with the edit button (only appears if you've clicked the Advanced option as mentioned above).

There I set the first one to "Synchronise tracks to:" as s:\musica\<Album Artist>\<Album>\<Title>
Obviously set up the drive letter that is correct for you and the folder structure that you like best.
For the second sync list I used s:\Other_Audio\<Album Artist>\<Album>\<Title>
The tick box is ticked at the top of each of these Edit dialogues.

For the microSD I did the same as above except this time the playlist selected for syncing is the one I set up for this purpose (Sansa Removable Sync). Because there is only one playlist being used for the mSD I did have to edit the playlist specific settings. I just set the generic settings (on the "Synchronization options" tab to the folder structure I want it to use. In my case this is just "<Album Artist>\<Album>\<Title>"

Auto Sync
If you want the device to auto sync each time it is connected then you can tick this option on the "Synchronization options" tab. You may also want it to auto-delete data on the drives but not in your sync list.

Now the device will sync both the Sansa and the mSD each time you connect them.
If you add/remove files to/from one of your Sync playlists and you want it to sync, you can just right click on the device node in the Tree and click Auto-Synchronize. With the removable drive (the microSD) you'll notice in the tool bar there is a little icon (drop down menu) for this device. It has the same little icon of a black device with bright blue screen. Clicking this you can set whether you want auto sync or not. You can also click this button to sync in that moment.

I find this whole set up works like a charm.

Enjoy.
