Converting AND levelling volume corrupts files

Post by Lutz »

Hi.

I need to convert my OGG files into MP3. Since I have been using MM, this randomly produced corrupted MP3 files, i.e. many of the MP3 tracks were shorter than the OGG originals. Sometimes the difference was "only" a second, but more often several minites of a track were missing. The missing piece was always at the end of a track.

I tried various ways to work around this, e.g. using various encoding settings, or tried to use WAV as an intermediate format. But I wasn't able to understand what exactly goes wrong (see also Problem w. transcoding ogg into mp3: skips, truncated files).

Now, I believe, I found a reproducible way to generate the error - and to work around it.

The issue seems to be related to combining two actions in MM: converting AND leveling volume at the same time. It typically appears when I work with source files that have no volume adjustment information. And it almost never appears when I use file that do have vol. adj. info.

What I do in detail is:
- Select multiple (at leats three) OGG files with (!) unknown leveling adjustment
- Press Crtl-Shift-C
- Enter ".\<filename>" as target, so the MP3 files are put right next to their OGG originals
- Use format "Preset: Extreme: VBR ~256kbps..."
- Select to level the volume of the newly encoded tracks (this step is important).

Always almost the resulting MP3 files are cut; typically 2 out of 3 are truncated erroneously.

Now, when I do the volume analysis of these tracks first, and then do the conversion procedure as described above, all resulting tracks are OK. Another way to get a proper result is NOT to select the volume leveling option for the conversion.

These two workarounds indicate that there is some bug in MM, when MM tries to do both at once, convert AND level the volume of the converted file.

Can anybody confirm this, or even better: can this nasty bug be fixed, please?

Thanks! Lutz.
