Replaygain tags read by MediaMonkey?

Post by orangejulio »

Hi, I'm a MM newbie. I am sure this question has been answered previously, but I have not been able to find the exact answer in searches of the forums.

I have used foobar, to which I am also new, to apply Replaygain tags (track and album) to my MP3s. I like the process and control that foobar gives, compared to MM. I understand that MM does not currently work with album gain settings, and I can live with that until it does. However, MM does not seem to recognize the Replaygain tags, and every track shows up with no levelling applied.

Q: is it possible to have MM read the foobar tags, or do I have to re-analyze everything in MM? If I did do a level analysis in MM, will that negatively impact my MP3s in any way? My goal is to leave all my tags as-is (and get them read into MM), in the hopes that a future release of MM will support the album gain tags. Foobar has applied the tags as ID3v2, in case that's helpful info.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You shouldn't need to re-analyze in MM. If you have the Gold version, just enable File Monitor (see the help file for more info). Once enabled, any changes made to the tags (including leveling) in Foobar will be updated in the MM database. For any tracks already analyzed, or if you have the standard version of MM, then you'll need to rescan the music tracks so that the tags are read again, and the database updated.

File Monitor is really handy if you make tag changes outside of MediaMonkey.

Thanks. I do have the Gold version, and I have also done full rescans after wiping out the database. All tags come through, except for the Replaygain values.

I have read various postings about ID3 vs APE tags, and I was wondering if maybe MM would only recognize the Replaygain tags if they were in APE tags? That's the only thing I could think of, since mine are present in the ID3 tags. I can see them when I look at the tags in other software, such as mp3tag.

Hi orangejulio,
although MediaMonkey also has a gain-support it doesn't support the default replaygain-tags, I think. And album gain isn't supported for sure. But you could use the mp3-decoder from otachan (http://otachan.com/in_!mpg123.html) which has integrated replaygain-support (track&album). Try it out! :)

You have to copy&paste the link!
And as Teknojnky said, I've written a script to calculate albumgains. Although it's not possible to switch quickly between albumgain and trackgain.

You are right, I did not know to strip out the !. However, it's still not working, but our network at work restricts access to a lot of pages. I will check it out at home. Thanks!

Try pasting the url "http://otachan.com/in_!mpg123.html" in the address space for your webbrowser, but without the quotes. The ! has to be in it.

After all that, it was a problem with my work network. Since it didn't work either way, I thought the link was dead. From home, it's fine with the exclamation mark. As always, I appreciate everyone's time and help.

Interestingly enough, I have decided to not get so deep into it and just use MediaMonkey's built-in levelling. I found that some of my tracks would no longer play in MediaMonkey or WMP after I foobar'd the replay gain. They play fine in foobar, but it does me no good if they don't in other software. I'm reverting back to a copy of my original, ungained MP3's, and just applying the MM track gain to them. I will probably run the album script mentioned above. Even though it's not the technically correct way to apply album gain, it looks like it'll get the job done - and I'm getting tired of spending too much time troubleshooting my MP3s. It's kind of ironic...a week ago, I was blissful ignorant...and now, after finding MediaMonkey and spending too much time on these forums, I've decided to re-rip all of my CDs losslessly and use MM to transcode down as necessary. I had myself convinced that my MP3s were good enough, but too much A/B between my MP3s and some newly ripped FLACs have pulled me over to the dark side. Great...

Thanks again to everyone that responded!

orangejulio,

If you're up for it, you might want to take a look MP3gain, http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/. When I mentioned Foobar, it is what I'm using for flac files. I use MP3Gain for mp3 files. For troubleshooting mp3 files, MP3Library http://www.jumpingcholla.com/jce_trapper.htm has a good analyze function.

You might want to send a Foobar'd leveled song to MediaMonkey support as maybe MediaMonkey has a bug not supporting the Foobar'd leveling. Of course it does sound more like a bug in Foobar.
