Help: MM recopies 1000s of unchanged tracks every sync (log)

Post by bmilner »

I see another user had this isse here - http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14851 but his fix isn't working for me.

ISSUE: Every time I sync my 60GB vision M, it appears to retag thousands of tracks in my MM database. Therefore, MM recopies those thousands of tracks back to the device and the sync takes a super long time.

REPRO:
1. Wiped MM database by closing MM, then deleting the database files from my documents\my music\media monkey.
2. Wiped my Entire Vision M 60GB using Creative's FORMAT function of their media manager. COnfirmed the device now appeared blank in Explorer and Media Monkey
3. Reimported all my music tracks on PC to MM - ~8000 tracks.
4. Sync'd device, MM correctly copied all tracks to my Vision M
5. Left Vision M plugged in, and in MM renamed a playlist, changed 2 tracks ratings, and deleted 1 track.
6. Resync device.

EXPECTED: I'd think MM would only copy over the few tracks I changed. Possibly it might recopy every track in the changed playlist name.

ACTUAL: The second sync caused 2122 tracks to be retagged in MM.These tracks are then deleted from device and queued for re-transfer back to the device. Transferring that many tracks makes the sync take a long time.

NOTE: I have two large auto playlists, one's everything 3-stars and higher and one's all 4-stars and higher, could this have anything to do with it? If you add together all the tracks in those playlists it's 1980 tracks, close to, but not equal to the amount of tracks incorrectly re-transfered.

SYSTEM INFO:
WinXP SP2, MM 2.5.5.0985, WMP11 installed, USB 2.0 card (its an older box that originally only had USB 1.1)

Here's a log for you

Here's a log of the problem. Hopefully this can shed some light.

Boy I hope I don't have some silly driver issue that no one else can repro (please!). And besides, even if I did, why does it somehow confuse MM into thinking my tracks need to be updated by the thousands on every sync?

More info

Post by bmilner »

I did a sync, then sorted the library by "timestamp" to see which tracks MM was retagging everytime I sync'd and it looks like it sways very heavily toward tracks with ratings.

In fact, ALL the tracks it tried to resync were tracks with star ratings (which is only about 30% of my library. Curiously, it did NOT pass back the ratings which I had just done on the Vision M. In other words, it updated 1000s of tracks on media monkey EXCEPT the 10 tracks I'd actually rated... exactly backwards.

Also, while it tried to resync about 2100 tracks, I have about 2400 tracks with ratings, so its not a 1:1 correlation.

Anyone have a clue!?

I am also having the same problem with my 30Gb Vision:M - many files are being copied needlessy every time I sync. This has only happened since I started rating song on the player. Please help!

Could you check Filedates on player before rating and after and compare both with same track in MM, this could get us some answers.

I'm Having exactly the same issue with my vision M 30g

Also, the "sync only selected" doesn't work.. the progress bar opens for a second then closes without any effect. If I right click on a playlist and then click sync.. it only sends a random number of files to my zen... different every time... and also then empties out some other playlists at random. very frustrating!

I'm not sure what you mean by the "file date on the player" - I can't see any way of retrieving this info. There is no date shown in the Windows Explorer file properties, and it doesn't seem to be shown inside MM either.

I'll try rebuilding the MM database as has been suggested before, as I'm seeing some other weird behaviour occasionally (eg I have my device sync options set to Sync only files within a certain folder tree - but sometimes tracks outside this get synced too!)

edit: I also have the above problem with "sync only selected" - it doesn't seem to do anything at all - though I've used this on previous MM versions successfully.

I'm using 2.5.5.996 and Vision:M firmware 1.61.01e.

I too am confused how I can check the time stamp of a file already on the player. You can't just browse to it in Explorer I don't think. I tried viewing the file in Zen Media Explorer and you can't get timestamp data there. I tried copying from the device to desktop, but that of course made the file created/modified right THEN.

I also tried viewing the file in Media Monkey itself, but the Timestamp field is blank for it.

So obviously more than one person is seeing this. Its nearly a showstopper as every sync is now recopying *thousands* of tracks, taking hours.

Please let me know how I can assist you in tracking this issue down.

I tried rebuilding the database from scratch but it didn't make any difference. Is there anything I can do to help track this down - eg will a debug log or anything like that be of use?

All help appreciated - I'm a big fan of MM but this is making it unusable.

The log posted above didn't help, because it seems that MediaMonkey_Debug.exe wasn't used to generate it. Anyone having this problem, please generate a log using the latest MM version and e-mail it to me.

This issue popped up again for me

Post by HeistMonkey »

Hey bmilner, I saw your post in my old thread regarding this issue. First off, sorry to hear about your ongoing struggles.

For anyone having this problem, follow the directions for creating a debug log:
http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=69 This is what helped lead me to my solution because I was able to recognize folders that were no longer part of my library but yet they were somehow still being scanned during the sync process. My conclusion was a corrupted database, which led me to the following solution:

Since this issue just popped up again for me on my Vision:M 60gb, I'm going to rehash the process:
1. Backup then delete the entire Media Monkey folder in the "My Music" folder in "My Documents." This is the folder that contains the mediamonkey.mdb file, and other settings files (be prepared to lose these). Just about everything of relevance is or can be stored in the mp3 tag so don't worry about losing ratings, art, etc. if you have MM configured to store these things in the mp3 file itself. Things that you will lose are playlists (but you can export these), number of times a song's been played, volume analysis, that kind of thing.
2. Restart MM, rescan, and sync.
3. Crap. Hmm. My own advice doesn't seem to be working this time. You know you have a problem when you hit sync, and the tracks to be tagged counter is going nuts. Well, next step is to run the debug, to see what's happening. Guess it'll be a long night. Will update my progress.

Just so you guys can try and trouble shoot this one and save a ton of time, only add a few songs after you clear out your MM library. This will limit the amount of info in the log file making it easier to read and will let you quickly sync with your Zen to determine after each step if the problem gets fixed.

So far, can't figure this one out.

Bleh, it's discouraging to be back having random tracks re-syncing.
1. I removed all music off of Zen.
2. Deleted the media monkey folder in my music.
3. Added only a few tracks to my MM library (to simplify the diagnostics)
4. Hit sync. 5 tracks Added.
5. Hit sync. same tracks retagged, removed, then re-added.
6. Hit sync. only 2 of the original 5 are retagged, removed, and then re-added.

7. Uninstalled MM, removed the MM folder in 'My Music', reinstalled.
8. Still having issue. Will start the process of transferring all video over to PC and try formatting Zen device.
Update 3-13-07
9. Formatted Zen device. Unistalled MM. Deleted MM settings folder in "My Music" and still having sync issue after reinstalling.

This is peculiar issue seen in other posts:

http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14851

Currently, I am able to sync successfully to my Motorola Q, but not my Zen, which are both currently connected. Selecting the Q, hitting sync, MM reads the device, and sees that there isn't any need to sync. Selecting the Zen and then hitting sync, results in removing content and resyncing the tracks. Very weird.

I will email my log file to Jiri. Next up is removing MM, and starting from scratch. I have a lot of video on my Zen, otherwise i would have added formatting the device to the above steps, but i'm hoping to avoid that, and my transfer time.

Fixed!!!! Thanks to Jiri!!!!

The sync problem has been fixed! Very simple instructions from Jiri, that worked after the second sync:

From Jiri:
I hope I found the problem, please check out http://www.mediamonkey.com/beta/d_WMDM.dll and use it in MM\Plugins folder instead of the original version.
This has worked brilliantly for me guys!

Again the URL for the new dll: http://www.mediamonkey.com/beta/d_WMDM.dll

Thanks, that worked a treated. Only problem is, it seems to take *much* longer than before to decide that no tracks need synchronizing.

So how exactly do you use this link? I click on it and my computer asks me what program I want to use to open the .dll file, and I choose media monkey. MM then opens and starts scanning as normal. Did it install?
