Hi everyone,
Originally, I kept my music on an external HD. I just got a laptop, and I would like to move my music to its hard drive, so I can take it with me when I travel, etc. I will keep the music on the external HD as a backup, but I want MM's database to point to the files on my laptop's hard drive.
1. What's the best way to move over the files? Is it as simple as copy/ paste?
2. How do I make MM's database use the files on my laptop, instead of the files on the external hard drive?
I apologize that this is a simple question that's probably been answered before. I did a search, but I couldn't find any posts that really addressed the question. Thanks for any help you can give... and thanks if you could direct me to a post that would answer this question.

You need to COPY the files from one drive to the other. Then you can do an Add/Rescan in MediaMonkey to have the program point to them. Make sure to check for "dead Links" if you already have a database on the laptop.

Thanks for the response, jc836.
That's what I meant.
Ok, how do I get MM to not include the tracks that are still on the hard drive? Right now, I've got duplicates in the library--one on the laptop, one on the external HD.
This must be answered somewhere in the FAQ or on this forum... ?
Thanks

Just remove the whole External HD-node in your library.Lady_Gerbil wrote:Ok, how do I get MM to not include the tracks that are still on the hard drive? Right now, I've got duplicates in the library--one on the laptop, one on the external HD.
Or, you could scan for duplicates and then delete those referring to your external disk (If you want to keep the reference to tracks not copied to your laptop - external HDs tend to be much bigger than the laptop-HDs...)

That's what I ended up doing... actually sorting by "path," then just hitting delete and removing the tracks from the library. Easy. I'm just a little paranoid about my music library, sorry for the basic questions! (I used to use iTunes, and I found it really frustrating, so now I'm very careful about what I do with/ to the library, keeping in mind that there will likely be repercussions I didn't think of!)nojac wrote:Or, you could scan for duplicates and then delete those referring to your external disk (If you want to keep the reference to tracks not copied to your laptop - external HDs tend to be much bigger than the laptop-HDs...)
You could actually copy the songs from the external drive to the VirtualCD and MediaMonkey will see both as the same copy.
