B4: Sync problems with Zen Vision:M

Post by shotofadds »

1. Sync takes a loooooooonnnnnnngggggggg time in the "preparing list of tracks" phase - in the order of several minutes without a progress update. This is for a relatively small library of 2600 tracks.

2. During this phase the sync cannot be Terminated - attempting this just leads to corruption of the status bar display, until it is repainted.

3. Doing a full sync with Beta 4 deleted all .pla playlists from my device (both those sync'd by MM2.5 and those created manually on the player).

4. Plylists are not sync'd to the device, even though they are checked in the Auto Sync > Playlists tab.

5. Attempting to manually sync a playlist (eg. right-click, Send To..) needlessly re-copies all the tracks within the playlist, but does NOT copy the playlist itself.

MM3 Beta 4 (1091) / WinXP SP2 / Zen Vision:M 30Gb

Please let me know if you need debug logs etc (nb. these will be verylarge!)

I have almost all the same problems as you. As far as I know, these problems have existed since b2 (probably earlier).

The only difference I have is that when I manually copy a playlist, it re-copies all the tracks, but does copy the playlist.

In fact you are right, it does initially copy the playlist - but then on the next full sync it deletes the .pla files again....

This one's a serious problem for me :-(

I think this is because it's comparing and updating the time stamp for every file on your computer, not just the ones in your synchronization list. I wish it would NOT change the files on the computer in any way (a one way transfer to the player) or at least have an option to do so. For me, it also changes every 1/2 star rating in the library. These time stamp changes mess up other backup routines I use so I don't use MM any more for synchronization.

1. Is need to review what's on the device, what's changed, etc. That said, we consider a 'quick' mode for future MM versions. That would however have some features disabled...

2. You are right, this will be fixed in the next release.

3. This will be probably fixed soon too.

4. Works fine for me - don't you have it disabled in Device Options? You can configure there where Playlist, Artist, Album, etc. items are created on device.

5. This is currently intented to be this way.

Re: point 1, to me it feels like this was quicker in previous versions of MM2.5? About the playlists, I have the following settings in my Zen device profile:

Auto-Sync list:

- Music: several folders selected by Location
- Playlists: various auto-playlists & imported m3u playlists selected
- Audiobooks/Podcasts: none
(not using Advanced settings)

Auto-Sync options:

- Delete tracks not in sync list & confirm deletion checked

Device configuration:

- Copy playlists ticked (in Options: none checked, copy to \Playlists\)
- Sync album art to track folder
- Copy album art to track tags

-------------------------------------------------
I have since discovered that ticking "Generate .m3u playlists for Library Playlists" will copy them during sync, but a) this should not be necessary and b) some players only support MTP .pla playlists and do not support .m3u, eg the Cowon D2.

EDIT: bizarrely, when I have "generate .m3u" checked, no M3U playlists are actually present on the device in Explorer - they are all .pla....

Yes, that '.m3u' is a little misguiding there, it should be corrected, it means the native device Playlists. Otherwise, it works as expected.

Thanks - that makes sense. However, I'm surprised that the default option is to NOT generate these playlists - I had to tick this manually...

Any ideas why RC1 has just decided that my entire library needs resyncing to the Zen?

A couple of other things:

1. The initial "preparing list of tracks" phase seemed to be quicker this time (yay!) but the "removing old content" phase took nearly 5 minutes to remove about 15 deleted tracks. That is unacceptably slow :(

2. The "Copying xx of yy" status text behaves really weirdly now - sometimes the displayed filenames change when the xx number hasn't changed, and other times the xx number jumps by 2 or 3 when the filename hasn't changed..

3. During the whole copying phase the text "1 track to be tagged" keeps flashing up on a second status bar - what is this? I don't have background levelling or anything like that enabled at this time.

MTP Sync

Tested with the Zen Sleek and couldn't repro. Could it be that the destination path had changed? If you sync again now, does this problem reccur?

Re. items 1, 2, 3: do they recur when you resync? (I can't reproduce these either).

Syncing again needlessly recopied 1355 files (no changes have been made in MM or on the player). I doubt the paths have changed, since the 'old' files would have shown up in the Deletion list.

Problems 1 2 and 3 occur each time I sync. I'll try to recreate it with a small subset of tracks and send you a logfile (this might take a while though...)

Actually, MM doesn't copy all of the 1355 files... the status bar jumps eg "copying 458 of 1355" to "copying 462 of 1355" then 463,464,472!!!

EDIT: It has now listed about 20 different filenames while apparently still "Copying 913 of 1355"

Is no-one else seeing this bizarre behaviour when syncing?

I'll record a log/video when I get home if that helps - sadly I'll be going back to Beta 4 if this persists :-(

Shotofadds:

Unfortunately I am not seeing these bizarre results because I cannot get my Zen to sync. I keep getting stopped from the very beginning as explained in this post.

Hopefully this video will demonstrate what I mean more clearly:

http://shot-of-adds.co.uk/mm_sync.html

The "copying track" number jumps from 307,308,313,314,318,320, then stays at 324 while copying many, many files.

Also notice that the green progress bar is only at about 70%, but the count reads 324 of 339. Something is clearly very, very wrong here!

EDIT: The "1 track to tag" status also flashes up in this video, but only once or twice. Previously in this sync it flashed up for about 50% of the tracks.
