Will Media Monkey try to overwrite my ID3 Tags?

Post by adrianmol »

Hi,

I've moved to Media Monkey from Windows Media Player 11 because I am fed up with sorting my MP3 Library only to have Microsoft overwite my ID3 Tags. I tend to rip my own CD's and I have ripped alot of Vinyl, WMP 11 gets all confused and renames everything given half a chance.

Finers crossed that someone will confirm that Media Monkey will not overwite the ID3 tags in my Library.

I used Media Monkey 3 or 4 years ago and I'm impressed with how good the new version is.

As long as you uncheck the "Update tags when editing properties" option and don't click the "Synchronise tags" menu item then they will not get written back.
Download my scripts at my own MediaMonkey fansite.
All the code for my website and scripts is safely backed up immediately and for free using Dropbox.

MM does not automatically update any tags or add new info on its own like WMP does.

Changes YOU make are updated in the tags, unless you disable update tags as Trixmoto posted above.

MM also does not automatically rename/organize unless you either manually do it via auto-organize (control R) or configure/enable background auto-organize via the library options (requires 'gold' version).

Thanks Trixmoto and Technojnky for the prompt replies. I was hoping that MM would not Auto update the ID3 tags in my MP3 Library.

WMP was driving me round the bend. I think their Tag library is maintained by a 10 year old who can't even spell the Artist's name the same for every track.

Hi Teknojnky,

You can disable WMP Metadata updates in the options. However a few weeks later you suddenly realise that everything you previously tidied up has reverted back to before or worse. e.g. A Colin Blunstone Album is now re-labelled KennyG, some tracks on some of my Pink Floyd Albums have the Genre changed from Progressive Rock to Rock, the Sex Pistols are no longer playing Punk but New Age etc etc. Yesterday I found 60% of my library just missing from my Hard Drive. If Microsoft don't think you have a licence they just remove it. I've never download from a pirate site so they are wiping out tracks that I legitimately own. Plenty of folk on other forums have found the same. Fortunately I keep backups on an external drive.

I'm just hoping that MM will let me play my Music and leave the Tracks and Metadata alone.
