I have both MP3 and WMA file types associated with MM, so that d-clicking one in a Windows XP Explorer window will play it in MM. But one major snag is that this means when I sort on Type, both are treated identically. For some operations, especially converting from MP3 to WMA, that's a real handicap.
Can anyone think of any way I can have my cake and eat it please?

It has been requested that MM will include specific file info in the type declaration. This would solve your problem.

Thanks - that would certainly be the ideal solution. Meanwhile the only alternative I can think of is re-associate WMA with say WMP9, instead of MM. But then, to play a WMA from some application other than MM (typically from an Explorer/My Computer window), I'd have to r-click and use Open With in order to play it in MM.

We'll have to see if and when they add this feature to MM. You're not alone.
