Context Menus and MM

Post by Rust - not logged in »

I'd appreciate your comments regarding the utility of the current context menus, and what some of your pet peeves about them are.

For example:
-cut/copy/paste/remove are near the top of the list (vs. Send To which is used more often), even though they're rarely used (most users seem to use keyboard shortcuts and delete key)
-send-to playlist is buried one level deep in the context menu

Let me know your thoughts about which functions require greater exposure and which less.

thx.

Hi there :-P

I will give more details about this... but in basic use... it should be the same order as the context menu in windows file explorer... Open/play... Convert/ scan, send to, cut copy, delete, properties.

I'm happy the way it is. I use the most properties, find more from same and get track details. I rarely use cut, copy & paste and never use my rating.

Hi,

Ok, for me, I a lot the "Send to" menu, to move songs, or to copy them to burn them as a mp3cd.... I've also created a small program to send a song to a msn user.. instead of finding the song into windows explorer... but since the next version will add drag and drop... i'll probably remove it....

the auto organise is also a often used item... and the properties....

that's what I use most often...

It's true the contextual menu is becoming bigger and bigger.
I know it's not really ergonomic and obvious but just a thought...

Why not splitting the contextual menu into 2 main parts then display the first (the classic ones: c/c/p, delete, properties, play now, etc.) from a right mouse click and the second (the "advanced" ones: get tracks details, find more, ...) from a middle mouse click? :o

One quick comment:

Anything in the context menu that is close to the bottom is immediately accessible, just hit the up key. This is probably less than ideal for mouse users but I thought i'd mention it.

One thing I find a little obscure is that when I want to locate a track in windows explorer I have to Right click & choose 'Find more from same'. Would it not be better to have the last 3 options under this shortcut to all appear in a 'View In' menu?

Also if you are looking to save a bit of space you could Have a menu 'Auto' or 'Automatic Functions' & put Auto tag from Amazon, Auto-tag from Filename & Auto-organize Files as sub items.

Another item could be 'export to playlist' (command from the File menu) - this could be added on to Send To / Playlist.

Instead of just having Rating it would be nice to have Update Tag & then Rating, Genre, Classification fields etc as options to change.

Analyze volume could be nice on a right click.

I am used to seeing Properties as the last item in a context menu this would be more familiar for a lot of users.

What about allowing full user configuration of the context menus? :D

Along the same line, I would like to see user configuration of the system tray menu. I have a multimedia keyboard and don't need any of the player controls but I would like to toggle shuffle on and off, as well as change the "mood" and "occasion" tags without having to restore the MediaMonkey window.

Add 'export playlist' to the context menu when right clicking on a playlist.

context menu

Based on the above, I'm thinking along the following lines. Comments?

Playlist Context Menu
=====================
Play Now
Play Next
Play Last
------------
Send to --> .m3u Playlist (this is a new entry that would appear just above Virtual CD)
Find more from same -->
------------
Cut
Copy
Paste
Remove
------------
My Rating
Auto-tag from Amazon
Auto-tag from Filename
Auto-organize
Properties

Hi,

I think this is great ...

Maybe just add a separator between Auto-organize and Properties (simce it is always separated in windows...) and it will be fine!
