MM freezing during sync - Ipod Classic 160

Post by cpsubrian »

Hey Guys,

I've been having problems syncing lately. Seemingly randomly, MM will freeze during a sync with my Ipod Classic 160G. This freeze crashes MM and corrupts the Ipod's database rendering the sync a fail. Each time I restore the Ipod to factory settings before the sync. It seems to happen on any size sync, from my whole library of 9000 songs to mini syncs of a few hundred songs. Sometimes I can get a small sync to work and the songs show up fine on the Ipod and in iTunes, but I have yet to be able to sync my whole collection without corruption.

Let me know what else I can give u to help debug.

Just an update. I have been able to get more songs transferred by selecting them in the library and clicking send-to instead of doing a full sync. MM still crashes eventually though but I have been able to rebuild the library this time around. I would still like to solve this crashing problem so please let me know what more I can do to get a meaningful solution.

Thanks

See if you can get the MM support a debug log as described at: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... &sk=t&sd=a

OK... still encountering this problem. Here is some more info.

System:
XP Pro, Intel Core2 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 1 DVDRW, 1 internal HD, 1 external hd (music here), MediaMonkey 3.0.4.1185

Plugins:
Monkey's Audio Player v3.99, MAD 0.14.2b, .mpc Mousepack 0.98, OggVorbis Input Plugin 1.1, MediaMonkey WAV, MediaMonkey WMA, MediaMonkey MP3, AAC Format, FLAC Format

Steps to create problem:
1. Start up Media Monkey
2. Plug in Ipod (no othe pop-ups, or itunes starts)
3. Right Click Ipod, hit Syncronize
SYNC Settings: Music- whole library, AutoSync- Delete Tracks.. \iPod_Control\Games_RO\, Auto-Conversion Incompatible Above 128 to VBR 190, Device Config - Force iTunes-style fodlers, Update stabase on newly added tracks
4. After a variable number of tracks (as few as 15, as many as 1500) Media Monkey crashes (this could be on an mp3, or during a conversion).
5. The iPod is now corrupted.
6. Restart Media Monkey
7. Rebuild Device Library
8. iPod is now functional but none of the tracks added before crash show up.

Steps for a success:
1.Start Sync.
2. Stop Sync manually before crash.
3. Everything is fine.

1.Select a subset of music 300-600 tracks
2. Right click on tracks, send-to iPod.
3. Everything is fine (although there could be duplicates on iPod if I transferred old tracks)

I have tried to download the debug MM but the crash does not prompt me to send a log. I suppose this means its more of a program hang (infinite loop kind of thing) rather than a legitimate crash.

Again, let me know what else will help. I really want to get my iPod synced up because my new car stereo will be in effect this weekend :)

If you aren't prompted when MM crashes, you can generate the debug log by clicking <right-CTRL><left-SHIFT><TAB>. I think a log would help the developers more than anything else since obviously they can't replicate this.

Hey, I had tried that key combo and didn't get a response. As I said MM is totally hung up so I don't know how it would respond to such a hotkey anyhow.

Hi,

I have got a very very similar problem to this and I am looking for a solution, too. Here is what I do/did:

Process A
1.) I open itunes and restore the ipod
2.) I sync the ipod in itunes in order to get my poker game installed on it
3.) I add some mediafiles to the itunes library in order to complete the installation of a program called i-Workout (http://www.helmesinnovations.com/iWorkout/) - This adds 178 "songs" to my ipod
4.) I close itunes, disconnect ipod and everything looks fine
5.) Then open Mediamonkey and try to sync my whole collection (about 8000 songs)
6.) At some stage it just freezes. At first I thought that the freeze was happening randomly (it is not even a real freeze it is just that the synchronisation process just does not progress at all, even when waiting for mor than half an hour. The program itself is still responding, except for closing it down). The only way I can close Mediamonkey is to terminate it via Task Manager.
Then I noticed that it always stops at the same album, in fact at the same song. My first suspicion was that there is something wrong with the file, but then again, I used to synchronise this album all the time and it was just fine.
7.) in order to proove that this album is causing the problem, I have deselected all other music from my library (Autosync Options). I am only trying to sync this album now. When doing so, it fails.

Process B
Then, I have done another test:
1.) I have taken the song that Mediamonkey hangs on and copied it to another folder that is located one level up in the folder structure.
2.) Then I changed my synchronise settings so that it would point to this new directory.
3.) Now the song synchronises perfectly.

Process C
Don´t ask me why, but I have found the following "workaround" (it is not really a workaround, but better than nothing):
1.) I go to the location of this particular album.
2.) I open itunes and drag all files from this album into itunes
3.) I select all files in itunes, then select "Get Info"
4.) I change the album name to something else, then I click ok
5.) I select "Get Info" again and reverse the name change
6.) I close itunes, but I am not syncing my ipod with itunes (the IPOD is not even connected)!!!!
7.) I connect my ipod.
7.) I sync this album with Mediamonkey now and it is working just fine

I have noticed another thing when following the stops in Process C:
I usually embedd my artwork within the tag of each song. In my windows explorer (I actually use Directory Opus, not windows explorer), when I hover my mouse over the songs, it shows me some of the tags (e.g. artist, song name, bitrate etc.) and also the cover, IF!! the cover is contained in the tag.
In the beginning (e.g. before adding the songs to itunes and changing some of the metadata), even though I have embedded the cover art into the tag, the cover did not show up in windows explorer (Directory Opus) when hovering over the songs.
After I have added the songs in itunes and changed the album title (e.g. after step 5.), suddently, the cover art comes up when hovering over the songs in windows explorer (directory opus).

I cannot make any sense of the above, but I hope that a developer may find a clue or has a hinge in any of my descriptions.

Please make an attempt to find out what is happening here as this is very frustrating. It seems that I am not the only one having this problem, so maybe it would be worth investigating further. I am very happy to help out any way I can in order to find a solution.

My suspicion at this stage would be that I am not supposed to synchronise my music first with itunes and then with mediamonkey, but that does not explain why it only happens with selected files and only when these files are in a certain folder.

cpsubrian: Do you do any of the above things similar to me? Can you try to find out whether it always stops at the same song? Could you try my workaround from above and tell us whether it is working for you, too?

Your help is very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Best regards,

kuck

PS: I am using version 3.0.6.1190

I forgot to mention my settings for the synchronisation process:

Auto-Sync Options: None of the check boxes are ticked
Auto-Conversion: None of the checkboxes are ticked (I do not use autoconversion)
Device Conficuration: "Copy Album Art to Track tags" is checked
"Use only the first genre when muliple genre exist" is checked
"Force iTunes style folders" is checked
"Updated database based on newly added Tracks" is selected
All other checkboxes are not checked

Thanks.

Hi guys,

I seem to have a similar problem, i have just installed v3.7.1191 in order to see if this was a problem in the older version i was using of MM. Basically, I had setup all my music that was 10gb in size to import to my ipod after xmas, i never, ever used itunes - preffered MM so much more... but... since the weekend when I obtained a further 10gb of music from a friend (who uses Itunes), if i plugin my ipod classic 120gb the connected sign shows on the ipod, i cancel the autoplay and then double click MM shortcut... it simply hangs on the main and says "not responding" CPU 0% mem usage at around 49,000k. Even, if i safely remove hardware on the ipod and look back at MM it has loaded fine. I can then replugin the usb and the not responding occurs again?! Im thinking that its something to do with the itunes stuff but need some advice on what to try, how are your tests going? have you reported to the devs?

cheers

p.s. cant even tell you my sync settings as cant plugin the ipod!

Also having the same freezes. Unable to obtain logs. I would suggest the dev team try using about 9000+ songs (seems we all have this in common) and sync to an ipod classic 160GB (this is what I have and I dont think they make the 120GB's any longer)

If someone found a fix for this please let me know.

Thx

I had an ipod classic 80gb
It was syncing fine up until around the time i installed itunes but not sure if itunes is causing the crash in MM
someone mentioned the album art in tags option in the sync options. I think this is the culprit of the crashes.

Today I got a new 120gb (same firmware as 160gb id imagine) for free on warranty because MM was crashing during syncs and it generally wasn't happy when connected to any PC i tried.
The first sync I tried on MM it crashed after 125 out of ~15000 songs. 2nd go it crashed after 6 songs. But the ipod was still happy/accesable in explorer throughout.
So then I disabled the option to copy album art to track tags and so far im up to 3000 tracks successfully synced.

Lets hope this solves the problem,

I am having similar issues. I have tried synching approximately 4,500 songs and MM chugs along and when it hits song 4,500 the system freezes and Windows Vista 64, throws up a nice error and shuts down MM. I tried breaking the songs into smaller playlists to be synched, but when I hit that last song, the system crashes. I have resorted to selecting mini sets of songs by highlighting them and then right mouse clicking and choosing to synch them to the iPod. This works, but is a heck of a lot of work.
