Fast NAS: which one should I choose?

Post by gimme_stones »

A bit "Off-topic", but nevertheless I hope someone can help me (considering the knowledge among MediaMonkey-users):

I'm thinking of buying a Squeezebox Duet and a NAS to use with SB Duet.

<< Choosing a NAS >>
I have about 250 GB of music (22.000+ tracks) which is growing (fast). I would like a NAS which allows you to scroll and choose FAST between albums, artists, tracks etc... using the SB controller. The album art should also show up fast! I just don't want to wait like 5-10 seconds before the album/artist/song shows up The SB controller should react more or less instantly.

I'm thinking of a NAS in the price-range from 250 up to 350 euro's (if possible considering my demands).

List of possible NAS-devices: [price in euro's]
QNAP TS-109 Pro II: 260,00
QNAP TS-209 (PRO): 255,00
QNAP TS-209 II (PRO): 325,00
Synology DS-207+: 295,00
(Synology DS209+: 399,00)
ReadyNAS Duo: 325,00

Which one do you recommend? It doesn't neccesarely have to be one from the list above, but it should be a NAS which is fast. I just know that Squeezecenter 7 runs on these devices.

Hope to hear from you!

Thank in advance,
Dennis.

You might want to check out the NAS Charts over at SmallNetBuilder to check which one is the speediest for your network configuration.

Lowlander, nice post and thx for link.

Personally I'm waiting DLNA issues to be yet solved and see DLNA as more stable standard in Multimedia Streaming.

More info regarding DLNA:

It seems though that UPnP AV is the more widely supported format. It also seems that Qnap and Theccus support more features than some of the better known brands.
