Controlling MM remotely (networked laptop)
I have unsuccessfully searched for answers to this question. Any guidance or links to previous thread would be appreciated.
I would like to setup MM on a PC in an equipment rack in a closet that is connected to an A/V receiver with speakers in 3 separate rooms. For parties, etc. we would like to use a laptop to select the music, etc. Can this be accomplished within MM or do I have to use another application (like WaWi or VNC viewer) to control MM on the box that is wired to the receiver?

Re: Controlling MM remotely (networked laptop)
MediaMonkey can't do this so yes you will need to use a before mentioned solution or check out iMonkey for the iPhone. I think that using some form of remote desktop/control is the best solution currently available as it gives you full access to MediaMonkey's capabilities.

Re: Controlling MM remotely (networked laptop)
I use both WAWI and tightvnc. Just depends on what I need to control. The tightvnc gives you the greatest flexability.
Re: Controlling MM remotely (networked laptop)
iMonkey is a great product.... but as noted, it runs on an Itouch to control MM3 runing on a PC.. I currently use iMonkey on my iTouch, to control my desktop PC which runs MediaMonkey thru my home theatre. Works very nice.
But I too am looking for a product that I can run on my laptop - just bought an HP Mini netbook (1030) a lightweight portable wireless laptop running XP...its very cool...and I was thinking it would be great it I could load something like iMonkey on it, to, just like the iTouch, to control my desktop PC which runs MediaMonkey thru my home theatre.
I can do this in a cumbersome way, by running Logmein on the netbook, and taking remote control of the desktop...so it is possible...just looking for a more elegant way.
I will be check WAWI and tightvnc ... hadnt heard of them before.
For the latter , I see there is a site , http://www.tightvnc.com/ , but is there a link describing WAWI??

Re: Controlling MM remotely (networked laptop)
I have used VNC successfully.
I have a small, old laptop(with VNC client), controlling a high resolution large (23") screen (VNC server). Accordingly, MediaMonkey needs to be resized for optimal use.
The VNC (using wireless G) is slightly sluggish but certainly tolerable.
And the price is ideal

Like others have mentioned, VNC is a way to go. I actually use Remote Desktop to control Media Monkey since there's no more installation beyond having Windows XP pro.Punahou80 wrote:I have unsuccessfully searched for answers to this question. My motto is always why VNC when you can RDP? /nerd.
Re: Controlling MM remotely (networked laptop)
Re VNC, I switched form TightVNC to UltraVNC(also free) - appears to be much faster as claimed, and really simple to use.
http://www.uvnc.com/
I have not tried Remote Desktop, but I believe its only an XP Pro option and I only have Win XP SP3 Home Edition.

Yep, that's true. You cannot remote FROM an XP home machine, but you can remote TO an XP home machine.MediaMan wrote:Re VNC, I switched form TightVNC to UltraVNC(also free) - appears to be much faster as claimed, and really simple to use.

Re: Controlling MM remotely (networked laptop)
I have the music on my laptop and transmit to my receiver through an AudioEngine W1. That way I can take my laptop anywhere in the house, or even outside (I have a Zone 2 on my receiver that goes to speakers outside), works great.
Control PLAYLIST remotely
I'd like to restate the question to see if a solution has developed in the last couple of years.
I only need to control the playlist remotely. The partygoers can alter the playlist from a remote latptop in the party area while MM runs on a media center PC in a server rack in the basement.
I did not like the VNC or remote desktop workarounds because it allows the drunken idiots (my friends
) to screwup other things on the PC or network. There was a suggestion to use wawi but it didn't seem to fit the bill.
Suggestions or links to solutions would again be appreciated.

What about remote desktop into MM in party mode?Punahou80 wrote:

Re: Controlling MM remotely (networked laptop)
Bruecksteve - I took your suggestion and ordered the Audioengine W1. What a great product! All I do is run MM off a laptop - the library stays on the server. I'll have to make sure to set "party settings" correctly to allow drinks to only modify the playlist.bruecksteve wrote:I have the music on my laptop and transmit to my receiver through an AudioEngine W1. For my needs, this was the best solution. Hardware, not software. Go figure. Thanks to all for the input.
