Flac Tags problems

Post by PRGeno »

Most of my library is encoded as OGG or MP3, but I've just started encoding new music with FLAC.

Unfortunately Media Monkey seems to be having a problem reading the tags of these FLAC files. Other media apps don't seem to have a problem with any of these files.

I've tried both Media Monkey 2.3.1 and the new 2.4 beta. Both have the same problem where the files are only listed with the title and the artist is listed as the track number of the album. No other tags are displayed (and obviously the artist tag is incorrect).

For example, all track 1 files are listed as the artist "1", with no other information other than the title (which is correctly listed). So I now have artists listed as "1" through "16" with a mix of artists files listed under each number.

What am I missing? Is there some configuration option or plugin I've misconfigured or am missing?

Thanks,

PRGeno

OK this is my call, Please be more specific.
Does it show all info correct in some other player?
If it does please create one small file ~1Mb or less and send to MM Support.
So I can see what the problem is and if there is some I can correct it before 2.4 Final.

Here are some additional details:

The files were ripped using CDEX 1.51 and the latest FLAC 1.1.2 encoder downloaded earlier this week from the soundforge FLAC home page.

All tag info is read correctly in the three other applications I currently use, which are Foobar2000 0.8.3, SlimServer 6.0.3, and AudioShell 1.0. I'm running everything on a pretty beefy WinXP Pro SP2 system.

MM Gold (2.3.1.845 and 2.4 b1) are the only apps I've tried so far that cannot read the tags in these files. Both versions of MM display all tag fields as null, except for the title, and incorrectly thinking the Artist is the album track number.

The problem is on 100% of the ripped FLAC files, which is about 160 files (I didn't notice the problem right away during a marathon ripping session).

I also flushed and rebuilt the database from scratch twice, once in MM 2.3, and once more after installing MM 2.4 b1.

When I get home, later tonight, I will try to create and upload a small FLAC file which demonstrates the problem (that should be difficult).

Hopefully it can help you track this down. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. Or if you think it's me, and I'm simply doing something wrong that could easily be corrected to solve the problem.

Thanks,

FLAC Format plugin was made to support Flac 1.1.1a and all of its metadata.
I'll see what is going on I have downloaded 1.1.2 now.

One Q. Does MM plays FLAC 1.1.2 Correctly?

Edited: I have ripped few tracks with Audiograbber into Wave and then Encoded with FLAC Frontend and I could not reproduce your problem.

Peke,

Yes MM seems to play the FLAC files OK, just the tags are not correctly interpreted. I also verified JRiver Media Center also reads the tags correctly. So 4 apps have been verified to read the tags of these files correctly, with MM still the only one I've found that has trouble with them.

I also upgraded to MM 2.4.1 RC2 to see if it had the same trouble and it does, with slightly different symptoms. 2.4.1 RC2 doesn't put the track number into the Artist field, instead it pulls part of the title and puts that into the artist field. Everything else is the same where it ignores the other fields completely.

I have a small (600K) sample file I can send to you, but I'm not sure how to attach the file to this post. What is the best way to get this file to you?

EDIT: I just forwarded the sample file to MM tech support. Hopefully you get it from there.

Peke,

I just want to confirm that the next version didn't mean the 2.4.1.862 version released on Saturday.

I have .862 installed and it still has the FLAC tag problem, so I assume some new patch version is still on the way, right?

This was all going on at the same time (the 2.4.1 release and my reporting of this problem) so I know it would have been probably too quick to have gotten this fix in there before the release.

Thanks,

Unfortunatly 2.4.1.862 is RC2 put to final without my fix due to Time Zone Difference my fix has been seen to late to include but do not worry as Jiri said 2.5 is under way. Expect fix fast.

Peke,

What is the chance of getting the fixed FLAC plugin now, instead of waiting for the release of 2.5?

This is kind of an urgent problem for me and my library.

Jiri

Jiri,

Soon being such a relative term.....

Do you have anything more specific idea when 2.4.2 or at least the fixed plugin will be available? I personally don't need 2.4.2, but the fixed plugin is critical to my library at the moment. I think about 3 weeks have passed since this particular problem was fixed in the plugin.

I'm not trying to be a pest, but I'm in a pretty difficult situation right now. I have quite a few Flac files that I need to deal with before the 4th of July party. I need to either:

- Convert all these files to ogg Vorbis (which MM can't do either because of the same bug).
- Or hopefully get the corrected plugin soon
- Or hope forbid, use another, less capable library tool for the party.

The flac portion of my library is basically useless from within MM at the moment. And the distressing part is apparently a working plugin is floating around there somewhere and I can't get my hands on it.

Is there something in 2.4.2 which the fixed plugin depends upon?

Signed Hopeful,

PRGeno
