Massive filename / tag synchronisation - can it be done ?

Post by brookereal »

Hi there

I'm sort of a newbie and not the most technical girl, tried to search for an answer to my question but couldn't find it, so here goes:

Got a collection of many, many GB's and realised Winamp was not enough anymore so just picked up the Gold version of Mediamonkey.

Like most people with a large collection, track naming is highly inconsistent.

Can I get Mediamonkey to synchronise the filename and the tags so they are the same ?
Often there will be no information in tags but an ok filename, or vice versa. Is Mediamonkey intelligent enough to copy from filename to tag when that would be correct, and from tag to filename when that has the info ?

Thank you very much for your help!

it can be done, but both processes are separate and directed by you

auto-organize, will rename/move your files according to their tags and whatever masks pattern you set. If you have files without tags or bad tags, then your files also be named badly.

auto-tag from filename, will update your tags from the filename/path using whatever mask pattern you set that matches the applicable info in the filename/path.

neither are done automatically, although there is an option to allow automatic background rename (like itunes/wmp does).

You must choose which function to use and on which files, MM will not automagically pick the right function or files for you.

Most people work on getting tags cleaned up, then organize the files accordingly.

If you need help cleaning up tags, I would suggest you check out musicbrainz picard tagger.
