Copy NOT Move...

Post by disassembledmind »

Can someone tell me if it's possible to have MM do this, and if so, how:

I have a base folder located on my hard drive that has movies and music. All of the files need to stay in this folder without being moved or altered as it's used by more than just myself. I would like to have MM on start-up automatically scan the folder and make copies FIRST, then move any videos to one generic folder (My Movies) on my external hard drive using this format: <title> (<year>) or Jumanji (1995). Separately, I need all the music files copied (only) and moved to a different folder (My Music) on the same external hard drive using this format: <Artist>\<Album>$if(<Year>, (<Year>$),)\<Artist - <Title> or Bad Company\Company Of Strangers (1995)\Bad Company - Down And Dirty. If you're familiar with TV Rename, it's exactly what that simple program does when you ask it to scan your monitored folders (I wish it did it automatically....sigh). I can kinda sorta get it to do all that but moving and deleting the original files, but I only want it to copy the originals. I read about auto-organizing in the background, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

You can use Auto-Organize (Tools > Options > Auto-Organize) to automatically move files. However there is no automatic way to copy files (in theory it could be done with d_USBMass1.dll (Tools > Options > Portable/Audio Devices), but that can be risky).

Tools > Auto-Organize Files is the manual variant and it can be set to copy files.

Thank you for your help Lowlander. I had a feeling that was the case. Which seems weird. It copies, it auto-organizes, so why not auto-organize copies. Speaking of auto-organizing, I can't seem to get the manual version (auto-organize files) to work for me. When I click auto-organize files, I'm not given an option to choose an input folder (my base folder). I only see desired output folder. I tried making my base folder a monitored folder, but that immediately moved the files. Even if I wasn't trying to do what I'm doing, it would still be nice if MM took no action when I closed the monitor folder box, until I also close the options box (but that's just me).

So getting back to the problem at hand, how can I manually get MM to: 1.) Scan my base folder for any music files (only), make a copy, and move it to my library folder on my external HD; and 2.) Do the same thing but for video files (only) and move them to a separate folder on my HD. Or am I again asking too much?

On a completely separate issue, I was wondering if you knew what I might tweak if I'm using Windows 7 (Ultimate), and having issues with programs hanging and folders slow to index after working with a bunch of files (audio, video, e-books, etc.). I realize there is going to be slowing the longer I'm running my computer, and the more files I work with. It's not a case of something isn't working, it's a case of how can I get it to work better. My RAM is maxed out (8 GB) and I increased my virtual memory to 3 times that (based on recommendations of an article I read). Any other suggestions?

Thanks again for your help.

Auto-Organize Files works on selected files. So select the files and then open Tools > Auto-Organize Files.

d_USBMass1.dll (Tools > Options > Portable/Audio Devices) can be setup to sync (copy) files, however you can't enable delete files not on sync list as that may result in loss of files you don't want to loose.
