Gold vs free codec question
I have used MM for ever, I think since it came out. Yes I am that old. I was going to buy gold but wanted to know if all the codecs were included in gold or do i still need to buy the codec pack? Also does gold include any of the addons? I searched best as I could before I posted thanks.
Re: Gold vs free codec question
The Codecs are not included in GOLD. The addon's are almost all free (or at least there is a free version available).

Re: Gold vs free codec question
Just to appent on above:
As there is few licensing limitations (Like MP3 Encoding) Gold is suggested as upgrade even theer are workarounds on most of them.
One user Recently said to me QUOTING: "OK, I made it work without GOLD, but I still decided to pay it äs you didn't forced BUY GOLD, BUY GOLD OR YOU WILL SUFFER!!! Plus after six months MediaMonkey earned my trust. Your happy GOLD user"

Re: Gold vs free codec question
You don't necessarily need to buy the codec pack after you purchase Gold. If you buy it, try it out for a while. You may not need any additional codecs.
Problems are typically with AAC formats. Also, the MM codec pack description says flash but doesn't mention .flv. Many claim it doesn't seem to support that format.
Anyway, "if" you have trouble with a format, you can try installing Quicktime and/or a third-party codec pack like K-Lite.

Re: Gold vs free codec question
Thanks y'all. It was never in question if I was going to buy Gold, Just if I needed to buy codecs,(even though i might not need them) as well. I wonder if my old account is about. I know i have some early version on a cd somewhere. lol Thanks again! ....rambles on over to the Gold download dealy...
Re: Gold vs free codec question
I bought MM Gold in about 2006 or even before, version 2.x
Because of the "lifetime free updates".
Until v3.x, all codecs used to be included.
But now they make extra money with the codecs, and I feel betrayed, as the old functionality is no longer there.
Had to update to the recent versions because of newer iOS versions.
Now I need to pay again - despite the lifetime license.
Needless to say - I won't.

Re: Gold vs free codec question
The Codecs that are a separate purchase are additional codecs that weren't available previously. They're only really needed if you want to convert to the included formats. For playback free codec packs will do the trick.

Just to add to lowlander state.
Codec pack is separated in order not to rise MMW License. Main reason for that is that we pay royalities for each lon royality free Codec format our users do.
When you bought MMW MP3 encoding was free, now it's not and thus only GOLD MMW users can encode to MP3 pass 30 day trial or use alternative MP3 encoders. Same thing goes for MP4, AAC and some other video encoders/decoders.
So decision is that instead of rise MMW license for XYZ USD it is supplied separately for those that need them.
I think that there was a poll where users voted on that decision.

Re: Gold vs free codec question
I have purchased several gold licenses from 1.x on but there is nothing in gold that I want. I mostly bought them to support MM. I have even uninstalled gold 3.x? because of the burn speed. By 3.x you could not buy a slow burning CD. I always burn at minimum speed and buy the slowest burning media I can find. I believe they last longer and never make 'coasters'. That is a fact for DVDs. Verbatim 16x single layer DVDs go 10/$ and are expected to last 1 -2 yrs. Verbatim 8x single layer DVDs go 4/$ and last 10 - 20 yrs. The premium disks also have metal foil tops. The type of dye, burning speed and if the disk has metal and the kind of metal all predict how long the disk will last. Gold foil topped disks are supposed to last 100 yrs.
