I downloaded MM 4.1.10.1778 the other day, ran it, and was unpleasantly surprised, to say the very least, to find that it had hijacked most of the media file extensions. This without deigning to ask the user (me) if this was OK or not.
Well, surprise surprise, it is not OK, but in my book gets the offending app, taking liberties with my PC w/o asking permission, uninstalled post-haste.
Good riddance to rubbish. This is the inverse of coder/software-company integrity. Shame on you.

Willful app behavior
"Some applications are set to steal file associations..." - but not this one, surely?
Re: Willful app behavior
MediaMonkey asks at first install if it can associate with media file types and you can always change it under Tools > Options > OS Integration.

Re: Willful app behavior
I just updated from 4.1.9.1764 Portable to a just dl'ed 4.1.10 Portable. I updated to see if some weird behavior I was seeing in MM was still present in the latest version. I installed into the same folder. The install did not ask me anything about file associations -- and I had been looking for it, having read this thread earlier today. I'm running Windows 8.1.
After MediaMonkey installed, I have found that my file associations for MP3, WAV, and FLAC files were changed. When I double click these, either Windows Media Player comes up, or I get the "what program do you want to use dialog" AND a notification that I have a new program that can handle these files (I wonder what that could be.) All three of those extensions had been associated with either Winamp or Reaper.
That is not cool in the extreme.
I really want to like MediaMonkey. I need a program like it. But my first impressions have been disappointing. Having it mess with global settings defines unfriendly in an application, especially one offering to manage my media.
Good thread title.

Re: Willful app behavior
Only on clean/first install will MediaMonkey ask to set file associations. After this it will respect what you've set in Tools > Options > OS Integration. If you have any file types selected and the option to re-associate on startup it will of course take over file associations as that's what you've set it to do.

Re: Willful app behavior
Not sure I'm following. I would never have associated any of those file types with MediaMonkey, definitely not before I decided that I was going to use it regularly (which I've not yet done.... with those chances appearing slimmer by the interaction.)Lowlander wrote:Only on clean/first install will MediaMonkey ask to set file associations. On my portable install, when I go to Tools > Options > OS integration, nothing is checked, and when I click the "Associate file types with MediaMonkey" button it takes me to a web page http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... /View/146/ about issues with Portable installation.
All I know is that my file associations were altered by an update of a Portable installation using the MM installer.
Re: Willful app behavior
I mostly use MediaMonkey as Portable, and have installed numerous times. Never have file associations changed when doing this. I did see file associations change after installing the K-lite codec pack.

Re: Willful app behavior
MediaMonkey still does this, and it still does NOT ask upon installation which extensions to associate. It's a cool app but the hijacking of settings is really annoying. Another bad behavior is whenever it is launched, MM asks if you will allow it to make changes to your system. When I first started using MM years ago, I would unknowingly click yes, but I didn't realize that every time it was reassociating my files. I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. When I stopped allowing it to "make changes" I reasoned that MM was the culprit. I know, I'm super clever that way. Why on earth does MM need to constantly take over our settings? Is there an option to knock this off?
