Proxy settings not honored

Post by SirDracula »

MM 2.5.2 RC1 (build 947)

I need to use an HTTP proxy as this is the only way for me to access the Internet from inside the firewall. I set the proxy under General/Network and it doesn't seem to work for all requests. I ran Ethereal and discovered that for the following type of requests the proxy is bypassed:

- check for updates
- getting images from Amazon

It seems that Amazon searches go through the proxy but I cannot get any album art.

Proxy config

Auto Tag from Amazon should rely on IE's proxy settings. Are IE's proxy settings correct? If so, Album Art should be passing through ?!

I use different settings for the IE proxy, that's why it probably doesn't work. But this is very confusing, if MM has a setting for the proxy, then that's what it should use for all its access! Checking for updates doesn't really go through the proxy either!

It's strange that the initial amazon search goes through the proxy set in MM, but not the rest of data retrieval.

The proxy implementation in MM is messy, it doesn't have a predictable or expected behavior.

One would expect that all internet connections from MediaMonkey would use the proxy settings defined in MediaMonkey.

But one would also expect that configuring the Internet Explorer settings (or FireFox) would apply to all programs in Windows.

So probably the best solution would be to have an option to override Windows (Internet Explorer) proxy settings which would allow you set proxy settings in MediaMonkey. These settings would apply to all connections. You could add more options by having options for each connection (Amazon, updates, FreeDB, WebRadio, WebNode) and select which one you want the MediaMonkey proxy settings to apply to.

It appears to me that MM is using IE to display the results of an Amazon query. I know because I had been getting IE dialogs to allow scripting whenever I was using the Amazon feature. I have IE set to prompt before running anything the might harm the PC if I were to go to an "unfriendly" web page.

If MM is actually using IE as the "window", can MM control IE's proxy settings?

This is cropping up in a few places with MM.

Frankly, this isn't safe. Never mind trustworthy!

This doesn't have anything to do with safety, has it ??

Normally you set both proxy settings (IE and MM) to the same values, so there's no problem.
It would be nice however, if it was possible to let MM always use IE's settings. These settings (IE) can be automaticly changed when switching between networks. MM's can't. (the same counts for other software like Winamp2, 5 ...).
Extensions: ExternalTools, ExtractFields, SongPreviewer, LinkedTracks, CleanImport, and some other scripts (Need Help with Addons > List of All Scripts).

Actually what I would like to see is 2 options in MM:

1) Use IE's proxy settings

2) Ignore IE's settings and use the settings in MM for everything that MM does

There is no 3rd option here, using a combination of #1 and #2 is the worst behavior!

I would use #2 because I want different settings between MM and IE.

Proxy settings

I agree--this is annoying behaviour.

Moving to Bugs--since this is a general problem that isn't beta specific.
