from the experience of using Foobar2000, this can really improve the sound a lot!

I would LOVE to see Kernel Streaming support. I'm actually considering switching over to Foobar purely because of it. It really does make a difference.

I'm currently runnign MediaMonkey with ASIO out via ASIO4ALL. When compared to Foobar with KS, it sounds muddy and cluttered. KS really improves the clarity.

Are there any KS winamp plugins that could carry over to MM?

There is a Kernel Streaming plug-in available at http://rapidshare.de/files/32972612/out ... g.rar.html . It isn't perfect, but with some small improvements it could be useful - C++ sources are included.

I'm interested in making this work well in MediaMonkey, so let me know if you plan to improve it.

After doing some research I cam across another KS plug-in here: http://www.stevemonks.com/ksplugin/

Is this the same one?

Sounds horrible on high-end equipment.

Yep. I can hear a big difference between foobar and MM with my hardware. So much that i will definitely NOT be using MM to listen to music with. For now its only going to be used for organization but i would really prefer to listen to my music in MM. A plugin that WORKS is direly needed for anybody with high-end audio hardware.

What also might work (be easier to make than a plug-in) is a script to bypass the internal player and launch/play everything in the playlist through foobar.

Yeah, ideally, I'd like the SQ of Foobar combined with the interface/organization of MediaMonkey.

Audio quality of MM should be pretty much only about a good combination of input and output plug-ins working well on your system. You could try to use some kernel streaming plug-in (links above) and check out whether the audio quality is ok for you then. And if it isn't, try to compare on WAVs, so that mp3 decoding doesn't influence the results (or try alternative mp3 input plug-ins).

want to try kernel streaming plug ins

Post by Simon Chick »

I am very interested in developing the most audiophile possible output using MM as both organiser and player, albeit in MP3 (ripped EAC/LAME 320bps).

It is a real pity this thread dried up as it seemed to be the only one developing the issue. I have 27,500 files and I do not want to start messing with foobar.

I am exporting from MM2.5.5.996 on an Intel P4 PC to a USB DAC and then to the HiFi

I downloaded the Steve Monks latest kernel streaming plugin. The link to the other plugin in the thread is dead. I put the dll in MM plugins folder, found it in the output plugins folder of MM Options, selected it, then ... nothing would play, and MM froze.

Fortunately it was reversible.

What should I do to make it work?

Is there anybody out there who is using it? Do they hear a difference?

Really want to be educated on this one!

I tried the plugin and it works, but don't ask me if it is better. It probably is a bit better, but still my sound card's equalizer settings have effect on the output (what is supposed not to happen).
Extensions: ExternalTools, ExtractFields, SongPreviewer, LinkedTracks, CleanImport, and some other scripts (Need Help with Addons > List of All Scripts).

Thanks for quick comment. Can you identify what I might have done wrong to install it? Doing anything with .dll's makes me nervous at the best of times.
If there is any more info needed about my setup please ask.
Thanks in advance

I took the same steps as you: I unzipped the dll file, put it in MM's Plugins folder, (re)started MM, selected the plugin as active output plugin in the options, started playback.
I have WindowsXP SP2 and I'm using MM 2.5.5.988. Sound card driver is Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver (WDM) for VIA 686/8231.
Is your sound driver up to date?

Thanks for that. I will try again. Maybe I rushed it last time.
I do not have a sound card, in the normal sense.
Instead I have a Scott Nixon USB DAC with tube buffer; it is just recognised as a USB Sound Device by Windows, with no dedicated driver. I have Win XP SP2, fully updated, so assume that the drivers are up to date.
It is actually from reading about drawbacks with the Windows kernel mixer, and the general desire to try to make it better that has driven this desire to change to an alternative way of operating.
I will try installing again then re-post.

@Simon Chick
I have new MotherBoard with new CMI 7.1 Audio that WinXP SP2 recognize as USB audio. Althru it works its power is unleashed only when I installed some beta drivers I have found on Internet. Big difference in fidelity (30%+ improvement). Search/find any driver and try again.

Thanks but wow! 'search any driver'? I need more hand holding than that!
Seriously, what search should I do? Specifically what am I looking for?
No doubt sounding like a complete doofus, but these are genuine questions.
