If your main purpose is to recover your music files, and such things as playcounts and playlists are less important, then my first move would be to locate the files on my android device, and use something like File Manage Plus to copy them over to the music folder on the PC. You can also connect the phone to the PC using USB, and then access the files on your Samsung using Windows Explorer and copy them that way.
Then you can install MMW on the PC (or if it it is installed already, OK too) and scan the said music folder, which will get you the listing of all the files that are in there.
If your plalists are extensive, only then you need to pursue the Sync option, which i know very little about why it sometimes does not work.
