Setting MM5 portable as default for media files

Setting MM5 portable as default for media files
I can't seem to make MM5 portable my default player for music files. I currently have MM4 set as default and I've tried going to an mp3 file in Explorer and right clicking:
Open With>Choose Another App>More Apps>Look For Another App On This PC>
Then navigating to my MM5 portable folder (C:\MediaMonkey 5\MediaMonkey.exe) but it just opens up MM4.
I've also tried using the Default Apps setting in Win 10 but under 'Music player' it just has MM4 listed (as well as my installed audio editor and PotPlayer which I use for videos) and there's no way to navigate to my portable folder. The only other option is 'Look for an app in the Microsoft store'.

Re: Setting MM5 portable as default for media files
I can confirm this. Both MM4 and MM5 here are installed as portable.

Re: Setting MM5 portable as default for media files
I can confirm, even if Windows Media Player is set to be the default, it opens MM4 instead of the portable install of MM5. Tracked as https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=17397

I uploaded many addons to MM's addon page, but not all of those were created by me. "By drakinite, Submitted by drakinite" means I made it on my own time. "By Ventis Media, Inc., Submitted by drakinite" means it may have been made by me or another MediaMonkey developer, so instead of crediting/thanking me, please thank the team. You can still ask me for support on any of our addons.

We've found that preforming a fix for this would have the potential for unforeseen bugs, so we'll be looking at it for the 5.0.1 release instead of immediately. In the meantime, you can create a non-portable installation of MM5. You can copy MM5.db and persistent.json from the Portable subfolder to %appdata%/MediaMonkey5 to copy your database and settings

Thanks for feeding back. It's not really a big problem so I'll probably stay with MM5 portable until it's able to be looked at later.drakinite wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 1:09 pm We've found that preforming a fix for this would have the potential for unforeseen bugs, so we'll be looking at it for the 5.0.1 release instead of immediately. The reason I haven't chosen a non-portable MM5 is that since a recent Win 10 update I started getting an elevated UAC prompt every time I open my non-portable MM4. I find that quite annoying having to dismiss every time and the fix that I saw mentioned was to use a portable install. So I just thought if I'm making the switch to MM5 I might as well use the portable version.
Re: Setting MM5 portable as default for media files
Yeah, non-portable MM4 does do that UAC prompt every time you open it, which I agree is annoying. But non-portable MM5 doesn't do that

I believe UAC is triggered by file associations on startup and MicroPlayer.

Re: Setting MM5 portable as default for media files
I think that was one of the pages I originally saw when trying to fix the MM4 UAC prompt. But your support page says to disable 'Re-associate File Types on Startup' option if available and that option isn't there. It just brings up a Windows prompt to go to Settings>Apps>Default Apps. But I *do* want music files associated with MM so I figured I'd just forget it and go for a portable install this time. But I might try MM5 non-portable later if the UAC prompt issue has gone.Lowlander wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 1:51 pm I believe UAC is triggered by file associations on startup and MicroPlayer.

In general are there any benefits/disadvantages of portable vs non-portable for MM5?
Re: Setting MM5 portable as default for media files
That's only available in the regular (non-Portable) install.
I've been using Portable Installs for years as it allows multiple installs without issues. I don't have MediaMonkey associated with any files so that's not a drawback for me. You can't run the MediaMonkey Service with a Portable Install and I think that's about the only difference.

My MM4 is a regular (non-portable) install. Anyway I'll probably stay with the portable for MM5. I don't really know what the MediaMonkey Service is used for so I guess I probably don't need/use it

It can run DLNA/Sync before Windows logon without the need to logon to Windows and start MediaMonkey.

Benefits of non-portable are that it is integrated into OS (see Options > OS Integration) -- so you can have music files associated with MM5.
