Find More Of Same has a disappointing limitation [#17952]

Post by Barry4679 »

If I am in a custom collection, the Find More From Same facility has no option to look outside the current collection.

This can be a frustrating limitation. It is OK that there is the option to be constrained by the collection, but a global search option would be an even more useful addition IMO:
  • MM5 already has hyperlink options, on several of the Views, to navigate to the list of tracks within the custom collections, that are from the same album, or by the same Artist ... so FMOS is just duplicating what is already there from one POV
  • but there is nothing deliver FMOS globally
  • it would be good if we could FMOS, with the collection constraint toggle on, or toggled off[/list]
Use Case example:
  • custom collection is filtered to tracks added within the prior year
  • navigate to a track or album
  • think "I wonder what other tracks have I by this Artist or album?
  • seems disappointing that MM5 has no built-in in mechanism to scratch this itch
  • I know that MM4 had the same limitation, but MM5 tries harder doesn't it?
Want a dark skin for MM5? This is the one that works best for me .. elegant, compact & clear.

Interesting, but true. Never looked ate this that way. I always use Entire Library collection that do not have such limitation. I guess sort of Check Box for Global search would be enough or Options setting to globally set the desired behavior?

Testing it further, I like that FMFS is current collection limited, but as you said no all would prefer that?

I also like it that MM5 has an option for FMFS to be constrained to the custom collection.
But I don't like it that there is not also an option to look beyond the currently active custom collection.

You have needlessly dumbed down the facility to restricted Use Cases only.

Always use EntireLibrary? ... I guess that you didn't need to buy the Gold edition then ?

There could be various ways to implement this in the UI:
  • firstly, the UI appears wrong currently .. see the ellipsis here? That indicates that the FMFS is going to open a dbox doesn't it? ... maybe you could open a dbox with a "constrain to Custom Collection?" checkbox
  • what would be best is that a normal click in the 2nd level menu retained the existing constrained search, but a SHIFT+click was a global search ... with a explanatory heading at the top of the sub-menu

Thanks for creating the Mantis submission.
A static setting in the Options menu would not be the preferred implementation.
A dynamic scope selection would be best, so the User could set the scope at individual query time.
ie. some like this would be prefered over what is written in your Mantis submission ... IMO
