Song Volumes on Gigabeat s60

Post by Chooch »

I recently tried to level the volumes of my music library. And unfortunately I did this without reading up on the teminology first.

So i analyzed the levels of all of the tracks, and then went on to "Level the tracks"...Yes I realize my error now. But in essence it should have effectively done exactly what I wanted. It should have leveled the volumes of the music for playback on both Media Monkey and my Gigabeat. However, now my music seems to be even more "out of whack". Everything seems quieter on the gigabeat and some songs (still trying to figure out why these certain songs) are barely audible.

How is this possible? Is there any sort of remedy? If I were to apply MP3Gain to the songs now, would it have an even greater negative impact?

It may be possible to replay gain your music back up, but a lot depends on what program you used to level (was it MM 2.5 or 3 beta). You also need to have an idea of what the leveling was so that you can essentially relevel to a higher volume.

This probably won't fix things perfectly, but it might be the best you can do (or you can just turn up the volume on your device).

In general, leveling will almost always reduce the volume of your music. Generally speaking, music is always recorded at too high of a volume. The purpose of leveling is to put all your music onto an even level and more importantly, to bring the levels down so that you aren't hearing all the noise that comes with listening to music too loud.

That being said, I prefer to have my music analyzed without actually doing the leveling. Being a relatively recent convert from Winamp, I was using Mp3gain in the past to tag all my music for track and album gains, so leveling would not be useful (I often switch between album and track gains depending on how I am listening to my music).

In your case, I don't think you can undo what was done, but you can set a new level as needed. Just note that releveling your music higher may add noise back into the recording (due to spikes exceeding the full saturation of your music). This might not be ideal.
