Can I change the "genre" list?

Post by daved »

I have a couple of strange entries in the dropdown genre list -

1969
4DsoëAP?

I also could do with zapping a lot of the existing ones as they are entirely irrelevant to my collection.

The examples above are in the Access database but can I edit that list without causing problems elsewhere. What happens if I delete a record for a track that's already classified under that genre?

Deleting 'useless' genres

Post by rusty »

This issue has been raised by a number of people.

As of MM 2.0.1, once a genre is in the list, there's no friendly way to remove it (and if you're not careful, you can cause problems by editing the db directly).

For more info, see:
http://www.songs-db.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=489

Given the number of complaints, we'll raise the priority on a fix for this.

Rusty, Can we delete custom genre from DB (it Is Not Used in any song in Library) at no Cost of functionality in MM? Or we must Rename it to something else?

Yes, those who want and can do it manually in the Access database, they can delete custom genre in the 'Genres' table (with id>=100000). However, please keep the standard genres there.

I'm a user of version 2.4.2.874 (Gold), and have MM installed on both my PC's in a little network. My MP3-files are filed on one of these.
On one of the PC's I see a lot of unused genres. I know for sure they are unused because no files are shown when I select such a genre under 'Library'. I also see them 'in black' in the list using 'Properties'.

On the other PC I don't see them. There everything's allright.
On the 'problem-PC' I opened the MDB and looked into the GENRE-table, and the only genres I see are the standard genres. Then I copied the MDB-file from the 'OK-PC' to the 'problem-PC', but nothing changed. What goes wrong?

What do you mean nothing has changed? Did the file copy properly? Did you have MM running when you copied?

means I still see the genres that I don't wanna see. Nothing has changed.
Did the file copy properly?
Yes.
Did you have MM running when you copied?
No, of course I did not.

By the way, on the 'OK-PC' I see only the standard genres as well, which means records with genre-ID 1-147. Where are the other genres stored?

I'm sorry but I don't understand how the file can contain different tables on different computers. If you copy it successfully from the ok-pc to the prob-pc then the file must be the same. The genres (to my knowledge) are not stored anywhere other than the database file.

I can't reproduce the problem:

In MM, I change the genre of a song (without genre) from "" to "Ollalla" (just a non-existing genre).
The genre is added to the genre-node and the genre-table in db.
I remove the genre from the song, so no song uses genre "Ollalla" anymore. When I refresh the genre-node, the genre is gone, but it's still in the table.
I close MM and see that "Ollalla" is still in the db.
I re-open MM and see that "Ollalla" is gone!

So, I can't see a problem. All the custom genres that I removed in the past aren't in the db, as is should be.
I seems that MM deletes unused genres on startup, at least on my computer.

Cheers

On my 'OK-PC' everything goes just like you describe it, and can't I reproduce the problem neither. Thanks for trying anyway!
