nwender it sounds like you want different computers to share the same database. Is that what you mean by "library file"?

If so, you can do as B B did in the above post:

I have 1 NAS unit with all my music, 20.000 +, on. 4 laptops (LT), all with MM installed. On the NAS is also the MM.DB. The NAS is mapped on all 4 LT as Z: and then i have (has?) changed the path in the .ini to DBNAME=Z:\(path to MM.DB) . No matter what LT i'm working on i'm connected to the same MM.DB and therefore whatever im doing (tagging/reorganizing/playcount/etc.) will show when i open up whatever LT i get my hands on next.

He has all the MM programs on different computers all referring to the same database file. This is set in the .ini file for each MM installation. I believe there are very clear and detailed instructions in the support sections...here's one for changing the db location:

BB "mapped" the NAS drive on each computer and used that for the path reference in the .ini file to the one database file location... not the UNC address.

I am so happy to hear functionality like this being included in version 4. I too would prefer not to install numerous fragmented applications to manage, share and stream my media throughout the home. I'm also glad to see that standards like DLNA and UPnP are being included. One question I have is will this new functionality include a separate server component that can easily be installed on a NAS and/or Windows Home Server? Specifically, I'm looking at building my own WHS and would love to have a MM add-in for it. I could then manage my media via a client desktop or laptop, but the streaming would be done from a central (low-power) media server.

Can we have a sense of when MM 4 is likely to come out? It sounds like it would have the function I crave. I have three kids and a wife who want access to the big music database I've built up (the main purpose is for a Linn DS system, a bit like a Sonos). I have Twonky 5 installed as a server but I cannot see any solution yet that would allow me to browse the server and stream content to client PCs.

Right now they access the ibrary on the server but just through simple file sharing. The problem is this places an overhead on the network and the server machine, as was mentioned in another post. The other problem is that they need to rescan tracks to the library in MM on a regular basis - but kids/wives being kids/wives, they hate doing that! And the only solution that gets around it is the browsing/streaming one, AFAIK.

Essential function as I see it - I'm actually very surprised no-one else seems to have delivered an effective solution to this yet.

Devs have already started working on these new features and all signs point toward a 4.0 release after the release of 3.1.2.
