GMail/tag cloud style labels/tags.

Post by rlpowell »

Something I really really want in a music program that nobody has, but MediaMonkey comes closest to, is web-2.0-style tags/labels, i.e. like for GMail email.

I have a lot of idiosyncratic moods and such that I like to label music with, and I really want a program that does it easily and well, so I can just click from a list/cloud to add tags to any song, and search on "X and not Y" on the tags, or similar.

I have friends that want this too, but nobody seems to have it. Is this something the MediaMonkey devs might be willing to add?

Thanks.

Many consider it already exists in the form of tags on your files. You can tag with basics like Artist, Album, etc. and more advanced tag like Mood, Tempo, etc. and even create your own with Custom fields. Through Auto-Playlists you can create rules as to what files show up on the Playlist.

Yes, it's very close, but for those I have to go into the song and type them in, which is very different from something like gmail's labels in terms of ease of use.

Well my "Tag Cloud" script allows you to see a tag cloud, but it doesn't allow you to assign tags like I think you want to, not yet anyway.
Download my scripts at my own MediaMonkey fansite.
All the code for my website and scripts is safely backed up immediately and for free using Dropbox.

Of course you'll need to add the tags first. There are some automated ways like Auto-Tag from Web or one of the many addons that can tag files, but of course you will need to get the data first for you to be able to use it.

I'm talking about personalized tagging here, based on mood and situation; there's no way to auto-generate that data. With something like GMail, though, I can select large numbers of entries and very easily give them all the same label, without having to drill down into each item. As far as I know, to tag things in MediaMonkey you have to open up each song's information page individually, which is a whole different level in terms of ease of use.

You can select any number of files, open the properties and edit tags that will be saved to all selected files. You can also Drag & Drop files on the different Classification nodes to tag them that way.
