MM5 Sort albums by Release Date [#16714]

Post by TheEmpathicEar »

I was able to sort albums by release date by selecting the down arrow and selecting "sort by release date". The result was "older" albums at the top of the view/screen. How do I reverse the sort? i.e. "newer" albums at the top of the view/screen? I took a look around and could not figure it out.

First this is the forum for MM4x. I find simply clicking the column a second time reverses the sort order

I am not sure what you mean. When I click "Sort albums be release date" a second time, it does not reverse sort. I will post this in MM5 forum.

Try clicking on the column header that says DATE that should sort it

Edited: don't repost .. just next time it might make getting help for mm5 faster

I am in album view. You are suggesting that I add a column for date? And, how do I do this? [When I was using Foobar, this is what I did. I added a column for date in album view]
EDIT: The repost is because I am not sure that what you suggest for MM4 will be the same for MM5?

Now knowing you are in album view it makes sense what you are saying ... i don't believe there is a way to reverse the sort order in that view

I just bought MMA Pro and MMW Gold on May 16. I have been using the sidebar[?] to navigate between Artists, Albums, etc. Are you using a customized view that is different from this? [Using Foobar with the Facets plug-in, adding a column for year in album was easy]. How did you accomplish this? i.e. In MM5, album view, I only get artist and album name labels. There must be a way to add year as well?

[Now we are in the MM5 forum] In "normal album view" [not Column view] Is there any difference with MM5 in doing a reverse sort? When I check "release year" it sorts from "older" years first, followed by "newer" years be default. What I mean by a reverse sort: "newer" first and "older" last. And, in Column view, with "Album" and "Date" columns selected, when I ctrl click or normal click on either the "Album" or "Date" columns, nothing seems to happen?

No, List by Album will allow this, but Grid (by Album) has no real sorting capability.

So, both List and List by Album allow sorting by date and reverse sorting, etc. AND also list all tracks for each album? But, Grid by Album, can be sorted by date, from "older" to "newer", but not a reverse sort? It seems like a strange restriction?

They have full column sorting whereas Grid (by Album) doesn't as a lot of sorting would split Albums into multiple (like Title, Genre, etc.).

But, now, I can sort by release date in Grid (by album) and can scroll all the way from 1959 at top down to 2020 at the bottom. It's just that the sort does not allow for 2020 to be at the top and 1959 at the bottom? Make sense?

Yes.

The best way to see the capabilities of each View type is via the View|MainPanelView|ManageViews menu item ... also available from the drop down menu control, next to the View type icon on the Toolbar.

There you can see what Lowlander is describing ... The Grid by Album view has has very limited sorting options, and no descending|ascending toggle.

The grid sort capabilities are dependant upon where you are . Most grids have no sorting options ... The Album grid has three options as shown in this illustration ... whereas the other grids (eg. Artists, or Composer, etc) have zero sorting options.

In the List Views you can design your own complex sort specification; including sorting by a hierarchy of multiple sort fields, each with ascending|descending option.

It is one of the slightly disappointing limitations of the new MM5 design.

As Lowlander was indicating, the user could easily make a mess of the grid, by choosing a sort sequence which fragmented the album ... eg. by sorting by track # ... but it would be good if we could sort the grid by one of the Custom fields, or maybe by Date Ripped .... and as you say, Ascending|Descending would be good also.

I think the overview is that MM5 has delivered greater flexibility than MM4, but with a few relatively minor disappointing limitations ... version 5.1 maybe?
Want a dark skin for MM5? This is the one that works best for me .. elegant, compact & clear.

@Barry4679 [and @Lowlander] Thx. Is it the Tool Bar that has the "Home" icon and is below the File, Edit, ... [what is this called?]? My point was that if the function in Grid (by album) already allows sort by release year by ascending, then why not allow by descending [and vice-versa]? This, in itself, could not hurt? But, thx, I can see how allowing other sorts would mess up Grid (by album).
EDIT: In Grid (by Album), you get album name and artist name labels below each album. Is it possible to add release year to this?
