"Add/Rescan" feature usability [#16997]

Post by xor »

I often manually copy a new directory into my music folder using file explorer and then want to "Add/Rescan" just this particular new folder to my MM library (re-scanning the whole music folder would take way to long, since it is on a network share - for the same reason, it can not be constantly monitored in MM).

In MM4, this was easy: I just click on an existing folder node alphabetically close by in MM4, the "Add/Rescan", then tick the new folder next to it in the tree view.

In MM5, this is no longer is possible. I always have to "Add location..." in the "Add/Rescan" dialog and navigate all the way to the new folder.

Would it be possible to keep the MM4 tree view in the "Add/Rescan" dialog? Maybe by placing a tree browse button next to the "Location"s in the "Add/Rescan" dialog:

I doubt that they'll revert this at the end of development.

Tip: If you select a node in the Location or Folders node in the Media Tree and start Add/Rescan Files it will be pre-selected for scanning. You can also Drag & Drop files onto a root node (like Music) to have them scanned into MediaMonkey.

Yes, I totally understand that.

Unfortunately, the node/folder it not there yet in MM since I want to add a new folder.

That is a great tip, thanks a lot for this one also! :-)

You should be OK if you navigate to the location using the Folders node (ie. not the Location node as suggested by Lowlander).

The Location node lists paths already known by MM to have tracks ..,. but The Folders node is something like the Windows Filer Explorer imbedded into MM.

You can navigate to an existing folder, then use the Insert key (or select Add/Rescan from the right click menu). ... or you can create new folders just as you do in Windows Explorer.
Want a dark skin for MM5? This is the one that works best for me .. elegant, compact & clear.

Hi,
To clarify things even further. In MM5 we try to simplify adding to library (as already said using folders or even Drag and Drop) and Add/rescan dialog is better organized to accompany Monitoring and also can serve as add/rescan. It was bit confusing in MM4 which and what option is right as you could do and from where.

Adding [+] would not help much other than using [Add location] button that have tree and also give quick access to other services. Prove me wrong ;)

EDIT (to correct myself ): Except maybe clicking on Path could open Location dialog focused on path clicked?

Hi Peke, I admire your multilingual skills, but ..

I don't think so, I am fully confused now :D :D :D

Yes, that is true, it was a bit confusing.

That was indeed my only grief with it: That I now need to navigate down the whole folder path to add a certain folder. But with the alternative workflows I have kindly been pointed to in this thread (and that even work in MM4!), this is no longer an issue!

OK, things happen when English is not your native language.

Thing I wanted to point out is that adding [+] would do nothing more than exactly the same if you click on [Add Location]. How I understand that proposal is that we add the way to change existing entries instead of adding new ones and then deleting old ones and avoid number of non needed clicks.

Do you agree that if path is linked/clickable, which would lead to opening dialog focused on clicked path would help making things more clear then we are in agreement, otherwise I am open to suggestions ;)

I don't think that was the problem.
Anyway the OP understand what you said, so maybe it was just my failure.

I agree with the conclusion that the OP came to ... that MM5 supports Add/Scan OK

that is very kind. However, if one knows how to quickly add a new folder to be scanned, I think it is no longer necessary:

Maybe pointing this out more clearly would be enough. Of course it would be fantastic, if you could drop folders right into the "Add/Rescan" dialog, but that may be difficult to implement I suspect.

If the nodes are clickable in the "Add/Rescan" dialog, I would expect this to allow changing, not adding nodes from a user perspective, so that may in fact be confusing.

Hi,
This is more tweaking issues that largely depend on user common behavior in similar apps and how they got used to manage/use them, having multiple ways/choices are good if carefully implemented.

I for example Use folders and then Press INS to add folder and it subfolders to library eg. never fill Add/remove dialog by using Add Location button.

D&D is a nice addon, will think about it in next few days, but like you said it may prove difficult to add (or not).
