[REQ] Missing the ALL tab; a Global "Recursive" button is horrible.

Post by Barry4679 »

One of the less successful innovations in MM5 was to replace the "All" node leaf, with the Recursive button (IMO).

I don't hate it, but I cannot see what you were trying to achieve. .. ?

But what breaks it for me is that it is global. ie. if I have multiple tabs open, and then change one to Recursive, all tabs are affected.

Recursive is horrible with a large collection on a network drive.
  • "horrible" = the UI goes nuts while it discovers and builds all depths of the whole Media Tree, and/or the Main panel Tree View Element, while trashing my Network Drive pointlessly
  • "horrible" = loss of control when trying to power scroll ... ie. type john ... it starts scrolling to the J, and in midstream it refreshes the screen with more recursive results, then starts the power scroll again this time looking for tags which with an O, etc etc
  • ie "horrible" = horrible
When moving tracks, I have two tabs open
  • one tab open to the Location node of a local folder, that I ripped to ... for this one I want recursive on
  • the other tab open at the Folders node, pointing to my network drive ... for this one recursive needs to be off
In this Use case the old All tab was a better tool, because I had an independent choice, for each tab, whether or not to click it

[REQUEST] Could you please consider either:
  1. make the Recursive button specific to the currently active tab ... just all the other controls on the tool bar
  2. restoring the ALL tab ... additional to the Recursive button would be OK
Want a dark skin for MM5? This is the one that works best for me .. elegant, compact & clear.

I'd like to test this out, but for the life of me I can't find a recursive button - global or otherwise!

In fact, I can't find an "All" tab in mm4 either? Is this like "All Tracks"?
Using V2024 LATEST alpha or beta build on Windows 11, HP laptop, managing 13k tracks

Hi Rob,

Is this button.
Maybe you call it something else, but it is easy to miss because it is modal, ie. is only visible in some modes.
It is visible in the Folder and Location nodes, and only when you have descended below the root level.

This is the "All" node; it is the MM4 equivalent in the Media Tree.
I think that the MM5 version is a big backwards step atm
  • it shouldn't be global ... nothing else in that part of the Toolbar is global, and it is not logical that anyone would want it to affect tabs that are not visible
  • and it shouldn't be sticky
    • ie. each time you navigate to a new location it should default to off.
    • in MM4 you had control; you could choose whether to click the "All" node to drill down to the next level, but in MM5 it does an all-levels deep dive discovery, which is a PIA with large network drives as it is often unnecessary
    • and in MM4 it was just expanding a tree, and was not wasting time acquiring all the art thumbs and populating all the rows and columns
    • So MM5 is like the light in your bathroom ... ie. you need to turn it off every time you exit ... and if you don't, the next time you go to these nodes there is an ugly lag, with the display flickering and flashing, art randomly progressively turning itself on, with the screen jerking about repositioning itself, while you are trying to use it, ... and this happens while the wheel spins, for multiple minutes, and the whole time it is thrashing your NAS pointlessly
    • it is nothing short of horrible in List By Album View
