new computer will not play music

Post by kenrose »

This is not a MediaMonkey issue. Maybe a computer issue, probably a windows 11 issue. But it prevents me from using MM5 optimally. I play music with MM5 two ways: 1) through powered, desktop speakers (so-so sound); 2) through a line from the computer headphone jack to the TEAC amp in my home audio system (really great speakers). This worked fine until I got a new laptop a few weeks ago. New laptop runs Windows 11, old laptop Windows 10. Now the music plays through the desktop speakers, but not through the amp. No signal at all, just a big electrical buzz. I had a battery issue when I got the new laptop and contacted HP Support. They applied all the outstanding updates to Windows and drivers and so on, so all should be current. I tried my wife's laptop, also Windows 10, and it works fine. If I run the line from the new laptop to my Nakamichi mini system (using the "aux in" jack), it plays well. So I'm thinking some kind of compatibility issue between the laptop and the TEAC amp, but really not sure about anything. I'm stuck. If this is not a relevant issue for this forum, tell me and I'll butt out. I post this hoping that someone in the broad user group has encountered this issue and resolved it.

Check what Audio Device is set to be used by the enabled Output Plugin. How do you switch between the two outputs in Windows and do other programs exhibit the same problem?

On W11 laptop, the Audio Output is set to MediaMonkey WASAPI (second button). On W10 laptop, that works, the setting is MediaMonkey DirectSound (first button). I changed the setting on the new laptop to DirectSound and it made no difference. MediaMonkey plays music through the desktop speakers that are plugged into the headphone jack. When I change to my amp, I plug the line into the same headphone jack and the music does not play. My wife's laptop (plays through the amp) does not have MediaMonkey loaded and plays with Windows Media Player. I don't think the problem is with MediaMonkey. I think its computer (maybe sound card or some such thing) or Windows 11. Those are the two things that are different. And, music plays through the Nakamichi system when I run the line to it. Totally puzzled by this.
